Achilles Tang Primer

Ok, getting there, bough some flake food, no dice, then put some of the Julian sprung purple seaweed, finally he took some bites! This evening I grabbed some spirulina enriched brine...for the first time he attempted to eat a few pieces, but not sure he ate any...but trending up!

Ok today is day 8, everything looking good...is destroying the purple seaweed when I put it it, even tasted and ate some small formula 1 flakes this morning.

This evening I tried some rods for herbivores and he started to eat it!

I bought a new skunk cleaner shrimp as mine died in the last month and I wanted anything one and bonus my lfs had a neon gobie cheap,so I added him on Saturday as well, the little dude eats like a horse! The Achilles does have some parasites, but not convinced it's ich, I've seen it on a powder blue that I had for over 7 years once and it went away, we shall see.

Aggression between the Achilles and sailfin are virtually nil now

Hello everyone.

Great thread.

wanted to know if you guys can give me some pointers,

I have a purple tang, and an anchilles in a 66"long tank. 2x2 foot height and dept.

took about 3 days to get them to eat nori.

I feed them as much as I can. which means nori in the AM before I goto work, pellets [new life spectrum and formula 2] are fed while Im at work using a auto feeder. and I feed him PE mysis when I get home after work, and a couple more sheets of nori till night time. he is eating well and is gaining weight. the lump on his stomach is gone as well.

last week, the maintanace guys at my condo left the A/C off !!!!:furious: I came back to see temp at 84 !!! its usually at 79-80, also, one of my MP40s was off !!! so flow reduced as well and surly, they both started showing white spots. :S

I started soaking all foods in Zoa, Selcon, angellix [amino acids], garlic, entice, Vitamine C, and lipotiv oils. [different one used on different feedings]
I also got a cleaner goby who picks on the white spots on anchilles all day and a cleaner shrimp. my GF calls them doctor. the relationship is amazingly interesting to watch, as the achilles just calms down and lets him clean it.

now, sorry for the long story, but do you guys have any advice for me ? should I be changing anything or feeding something else as well ? any Ideas how I could feed him nori when I am at work ?

the tank has high flow, and is a SPS tank, with minimal rocks to give them enough room to swim , Zeovit, so water parameters are spot on. the anchilles seems happy, swims around and picks on rocks all day, but not alot of algae as its a low nutrition tank. SOME aggression between purple and anchilles are still there ! I am hoping they become friends soon lol ,

any advice is appreciated, thanks for the great thread.

proper quarantining is the key to a healthy Achilles
i do the transfer method it stops the cycle of white spot and in 7 days the fish is clean
then i use prazi dips of 6 hours on day 1 and 7

well I do have a 90G QT tank, but didnt QT this guy, as I didnt think he would be comfortable in the 90G.

and white spots wont go away ... look at tanks who QT EVERYTHING, still stress in fish causes it.

thanks though .

if you want the white spot away fast only the bucket method will work
white spot can only stay on a fish for 7 days max then it falls off
and after falling of it needs at least 3 days before it can go back on the fish
so if you set up a clean QT tank with no white spot hetn you can do a water change an it every day and use the old water container/bucket with a air stone , heater and a fish hiding place (PVC pipe or sum thing )

get 2 of every thing change the fish from one bucket to the other one every day feed the fish before each move
take the air stone and throw it away pore boiling water on the heater , bucket/container and PVC pipe then put them in the sun to dry
(white spot can only live in water )

the problem with copper is it only works on white spot in the swimming stage so 4 weeks of copper is needed to kill the white spot

thank you :)

have you personally tried this ? that's ALOT of stress for a fish with white spots ! lol not sure if any fish would live past that horrible experience of being moved daily ! specially for a large fish like this to live in buckets lol I dont want to net him anyways ..

anyways, thank you for comments, mostly looking to see if I should offer it any other types of foods. though. so I know its getting its nutritions, maybe others can chime in too.

Finially joined the club yesterday. Picked up a 4 inches specimen from a LFS and they've had it for 2 weeks. It was a tough call because I am not sure if my 6 feet 180 gallon is big enough for this fish in a long run.

However I have been wanting one real bad and this one is a good size fish (Not too big but yet big enough to go through my 6 weeks QT process)

I've seen quite a few Achilles tangs from this LFS and what really close the deal was that this one is already eating pellets and pe mysis. I went to the shop right when they opened in the morning. The staff was feeding the tanks and I watched it swallowed a couple pellets. I asked him to put some mysis in and it nipped a few pieces and swallowed a couple meaty ones.

Took it home and acclimated for about 2 hours and off it goes into the QT. It's a 4 feet 55 gallon tank with PVC, plastic rocks and a sand bottom. This QT has been running for over a year as I have been adding fish to my system and every fish has went through the same quarantine process. A few hours later I started feeding it some of my home made seafood mix (mainly PE mysis, Hikari mysis and frozen brine shrimp with chopped scallop, clam, mussel etc) and it has been eating very well.

Fed it with nori soaked with selcon and vitamins and the achilles tang absolutely loves it! I'll be running prazipro and copper as soon as it settles in and eating vigoriously.

Why are you running prazipro and copper? If you don't see any signs of disease? don't treat unless you see something...

You will stress him out with meds for no reason.

prazi is for internal parasite...a very normal fish from look could well be at advanced stage of infection inside...it is always good to run such type of med during quarantine period...

My QT tank is setup with lots of plastic rocks / structures and is quite comfortable for a long term environment. I don't start treating until the fish gets very stable and start eating well. (Well, that's is if I don't see any signs of ick and fluke or other complications)

As I have QT'ed every fish in my tank, I will not risk the life of all of my fish because of this one. If this fish doesn't make it through QT, it's probably not healthy enough to get into my DT anyway.

On day 2 it is eating exceptionally well and it's already identified mysis as food. Between mysis and nori, I know it'll be gaining some weight this week and if it stops eating for 5 days during the prazi treatment next week, it shouldn't be a big deal.

When I purchased him, he flashed a little against the rock and I know he'll need to be treated but it could be a just mild case of ick that has not surface yet. I have treated over 20 fish with prazi and cupramine and have yet to loose a fish due to the medications themselves. (That included a few sensitive fish such as blue spotted jawfish, leopard wrasse etc)

I have learned that the key to the success is to start off with a healthy specimen that eats and they'll usually make it through the QT with no problem. *Cross my fingers* This one is very healthy and I expect him to do well in the next 6 weeks.

Update: After day 3, my achillies is eating very well and eating mysis aggressively. Noticed the flashing is gone but the fish has a couple of white spots and marks showing in different places. Seeing how well it's eating and trying to avoid further complications, I have started day 1 treatment of cupramine.

Only dosed about 75% of suggested concentration and seems like the fish is handling it really well. Still eating aggressively after the copper treatment. I'll report back in a few days and hopefully everything will be okay.

I agree with you 100% the first key to secede is quarantining

wow, talk about dedication, 17 weeks of QT. Was it just a choice to grow it out a little more before going in DT or you have a reason behind the long QT period?

I am just paranoid, with a dedicated qt in the garage it is not much effort, I gave 2 prazzi treatments and hypo for 6 weeks. Now it eats nori from my hand. I got it on march 7 and added to dt July 13 fed brine in the morning along with some nori for the day and mysis in the evening.
