Just brought home a little maxima clam yesterday. Been doing real well. I was looking at it closely a few moments ago and theres an aptasia right next to the mantel. Actually, when the mantle is fully extended, the aptasia actually is touching the unside of the mantle.

Theres no way to joes juice it without getting the mantle hit...

Thats no good right?

I have a peppermint shrimp that has emptied my tank of all aptasia, but this ones tiny and covered when the mantles out...

Any suggestions apreciated

Thanks,
Maggie

Don't panic. The damage you could do trying to reach it is probably greater than the aiptasia will do. I have them here and there in my tank, and so far very little seems to react to them even enough to retract. The pep gets to them when he feels like it. Probably if the clam gets stung badly enough to signify, then it will close, and then you can get it.

thats what i was having trouble with. If I get the mantle to retract then the aptaisa would retract too. and waiting long enough for it to pop back out, then so would the mantle lol

Ill just keep an eye on it. really enjoying its presence, Ive been waiting almost 8 months to get one :)

what i noticed was clam mantles are resistant to coral stings and such. so far my crocea has touched blastos, acans,, acros, and a ricordea with no ill effects.

good to hear. mine seems to be moving about. it wasent attached to a rock when i bought it. i put in on the sand, with some rubble underneth, but it moved off it....

Get two part epoxy and cover the area where the aptasia is. Remove it after a month or so, or you can just take the clam out and scape the aptasia off with a sharp knife or toothbrush.

when i disturb the clam the aptasia hides... Ill get a pic. theres really no way to get it without hurting the clam. its a baby aptasaia at the moment

That is why you take the clam out and cover the shell area where the aptasia is with the epoxy. This won't hurt the clam but will kill the aptasia (lack of light and circulation). I think the epoxy is call aquastick.

Have patience, the peps will do their job soon enough.

My new maxima had three of the little nems. The peps ate them all in about a week.
