acro eating nudi???

thanks brian

ok, small update:

unfortunately, the acro in the pic has begun to rtn. hard to tell if that was caused by the nudi or just the change to a newly setup tank. of the other two acros in the tank with it, the one that looked best is unchanged and the one that was already receding has continued to recede and is almost gone. i am not going to remove any skeletons as there may be eggs on them. i have also lost sight of two of the three nudis.

it will be interesting to see if they reappear on the still healthy acro and what the result is if they do. ill keep ya posted.

Are you positive the nudis were eating it? The monti eating nudis are usually on the live tissue or right on the edge. On the majority of your pics the nudis seem to be always on the dead tissue, where usually most nudis try to laid their eggs because of being a porous surface.
What Im trying to say is that have you consider the coral suffering from stn or rtn (the are signs of this like the frag being browned) and at the same time being populated by nudis that are not necessarily eating but instead looking for an ideal place to laid their eggs.

Just a thought.

no, i am not positive they were eating it, that is why i set up the new tank to find out.

i agree, in the pics the coral looks very brown, but before i took it out of the main tank, it still had healthy color and polyp extension. it sat in a bowl with no circulation and got pretty cold for about 18 hours while i scrambled to set up the new small tank, and by the time i got it in there, all traces of blue were gone. also, the pictures are taken with a flash.

found two of the nudis last night. one was on the original coral, way up under a piece of living tissue that is sloughing off, and the other had moved to the acro in the center of the tank (which is now a just a skeleton as it was receding when it was given to me and was completely dead before i found the nudi on it).

Interseting. I wanted to throw out that I have experienced a nudi who certainly favored my Monti's. At the same time, those nudis did eat some Acro's.

I have lost some blue and green acros after my montis were chomped up...... I posted pics and was told ....Nah.....Thanks for the much clearer Pictures!

On a positive note I have a yellow canary wrasse thats is fat and happy and havent lost a thing since...

thanks for the info.

If possible, we can probably all send you a few bucks and have you buy a few more tester coral...

yeah epstein, i havent seen any more issues in my display tank and have some wrasses in there now as well.

thanks for the sentiment scrapz, but i have some local guys that have already volunteered some brownout frags if/when i need more acros to feed them

Yes there is a wrasse. Hoven's Wrasse and there is another Wrasse, but forgot the name. Melevs has a thread on it. My best solution to kill them is too Kalk them with a syringe. If your able to take the coral out and kalk the eggs and the nudis, it will kill them. Let the Kalk on them for about 10mins. Take a tooth brush and scrap them off. The Kalk needs to be like a past. Just mixed a bit of water with kalk. Eggs will come right off. I was successful doing this.

My tank is all frags that I epoxy'd to rocks. I'm debating on whether I should break the frags off and treat them or just get the wrasse and let it ride. The problem is having free time. Thanks for the help. I'm going to look into wrasses.

well, all three acros that were in the tank have died and i have lost site of the nudis, so i guess this experiment is over. i would still be on the lookout for these when buying sps...

They appear to be Phestilla minor. So far the only food information for that one is that it eats Porites so if this really is the same species it adds another valuable piece of information on it. Check out http://www.seaslugforum.net/showall/phesmino

Why don't you send a selection of your pics to Bill Rudman at the Sea Slug Forum. He's always looking for more information on feeding & behavior & is the best person to provide an accurate id.

I just want to bump this thread because I have these in my tank. I originally had some on a purple tort that I subsequently fragged about 1 week ago. I thought I got rid of them until I saw them eating my blue milli tonight. I just saw two so I grabbed them with some tweezers. Hopefully there are no eggs lying around.

EDIT: BTW they seemed to have survived a revive and interceptor dip..

Wanted to bump this thread because im currently battling the same pests and was hoping someone could provide any suggestions...

Unfortunately I took my tank down shortly after posting. I was also having a problem with vermatid snails, so it was a somwhat easy decision. I bought new rocks and quarantined all my corals. Haven't seen them in the restarted system, which has been up now for over 4 months. It was a pain in the butt but well worth it.
