Acronics sps Peninsula

Within 24 hours of dosing half the recommended dose of RedCyano RX, I have killed all the fish in my DT except for the bellus angel. When I got home for work the cardinal, firefish and royal gramma were dead. I did 33 gallon waterchange and returned the skimmer and GAC. Then I watched the yellow tang, three anthias, foxface, red velvet wrasse, pink bar wrasse, yasha haze goby and blue tang die slowly. I'm just devastated, I should have followed my gut. I never trust products like this and for good reason. The tank is really beating me down right now.

My corals are all PO'd, limited polyp extention. One branch of the sunset milli RTN and half the Hoeki RTN but otherwise SPS are hanging in there.

Im in damage control right now and will be doing mass water changes over the next week.

Wow, that's horrible :worried: Test for ammonia, sounds like your cyno crashed hard! :eek2:

my humble opinion is

it has few things to do with cyano crackdown

but a whole lot of things to do with the product itself

ive tried some if not many products designed to wipe out cyano but results were never positive

Goodness bro!! This is just shocking.
Just really sorry to hear about this. It surely couldv been a nutrient spike. Run some poly filter ASAP.
You should contemplate on some bacteria+carbon dosing for damage control. Might help.
Keep it at it bro we are sure u can turn it around.

02 might have cratered, I doubt it was the product especially at 1/2 dosage but that's not to say the product wasn't the catalyst. In 4 years I have used chemi-clean, following the directions on the package, and have never had a serious issue. I think I remember part of the directions warning to watch 02 levels, which might have been just a warning since the instructions also say to shut down the protein skimmer.

This is terrible. :sad1:

I'm battle cyano myself, and I've contemplated using anti-biotics... if this were to happen to me, I don't know what I'd do. I'm rooting for you though, good luck.

thanks everyone, I do believe that O2 levels depleted to the point the fish died. I had an air pump running with my mp40 and CL. Didnt think O2 would be an issue. Now I read that some people run the skimmer without the cup for airation and I wish I did that. It still hasent sunk in that I lost all my fish... :(

i usually put the airstone around the return pump to make sure the water goin back is well aerated

Really sorry to hear about this......personally I've always shy'd away from using anibiotics on the tank. I have had good luck using a WM ultimate snow to rid cyano though....it takes time.

Hope you weather the storm with no more losses.

thanks darryl, luckly the frags I got from you are not dead but they are PO'd. not as colorful after this.

my PH is 8.4 and stable

Ah man!
That's gotta be devastating. You have such an amazing set up with all the right stuff, so this kind of stuff should not be happening to you.

Gotta be some kind of oxygen crash to take all those fish down fast like that.
Did this happen during the dark period or with the lights on?
Do you have a lot of algea using up O2 in the dark?

Hang in there my friend, don't get too discouraged on us. Things will get better once again.

Thanks Steve. As long as this isn't a regular occurrence, I will keep moving forward.

It was my fault. I shouldn't have dosed before going to work, that was stupid of me. This all happened with lights on... I only lost the yellow tang and regal tang after lights out but they were visibly at heavens doorstep before I went to bed.

The only survivor was my beautiful bellus angel. She is one of my pride and joys so I am happy that she stuck it through this. I'm not sure I will find a red velvet as nice as the one I had...

Oh well live and learn. My focus is getting the SPS back to where they were. Most have colored down big time and a few have RTN and dont look good. My parameters are all over the map with the large water changes Ive done in the last few days.

Things are starting to improve for sure. I bought a Hanna Phosphorus URL checker to combat the P04 and I am now getting a reading of 6ppb wich is 0.018ppm according to my calculations. Now that I have beat the algae outbreaks, coraline algae is starting to take off again. The SPS really took a wollop, acropora in particular. I am still trying to sort out a solution to my issue. The acropora are reacting as if there is a pest eating/irritating them (STN from the base / brown / limited polyp extention). However, after repeated dips none were found. Darryl stated that he thought I may have a chemical issue in that thread I posted a few weeks ago so I bought a poly filter as per Anup's suggestion. The filter showed no signs of contamination, It did have a brown tint to it that progressed to a deeper brown after a week indicating that I have perhaps a build-up of organic compounds in the tank.

After using the cyano remover and crashing the O2 in the tank killing all but one fish, I fear that the SPS may be starving because I use bio pellets and have now reduced the feeding (P04: 0.018ppm Hanna - N03: 0.25ppm Salifert). I am going to put a bottle of zooplankton on the GHL doser to up the feeding. I only have two angel fish and a wrasse at the moment. (I grew a pair and took a chance on a flame angel...I must be crazy, so far not a nipper though.) The other issue I feel might be playing a part in the acro problems is that my ATI blue + T5 bulbs (two total) are about 15 months old... Way older than I usually let them get. I have 3 replacements now that I will be changing out today.

If these steps dont produce results then I must have a bacterial infection of some sort is my best guess. In three and a half years of keeping acropora, I have never seen them behave this way and I have been through the thicketts with issues. It has been a frustrating month and I hope to get back into the sweet spot soon so I can update my thread with some sweet pics!

Thanks everyone for the help and encouragement through my hard times, It really makes the difference to go back and see people are rooting for you when you need it.

Hey Kev!!
Great to hear from ya and the good news about the tank. Nutrients seems to hav been the issue I guess.
Still running GFO? Don't change it out too frequently, since ur PO4 is within range.
Flame Angels and Coral beauty in my opinion are the best dwarf angels to keep in SPS or even mixed reef tanks. :)
Good luck bro.

Happy Reefing!!

Hey anup! Didn't see your reply. I am still running GFO. I have not changed it in a month but it is looking like it is due. The sps are finally starting to lay down some new base and SLOWLY starting to color up again. Growth has stopped completely for the last month and a half. Right now i am focused on ironing out the alk swings, a few more weeks and the sps should be back in full force. The flame angel started nipping the sps unfortunately. Its not going at them constantly so i may be able to keep it. It leaves soft coral, clams and LPS alone. The tank seems so empty lately, hard to find the motivation sometimes.

In other news, the future of this reef is now uncertain. Amanda has been offered a promotion which involves being transfered to Oshawa just outside Toronto. So there is a possibility that we will be moving to Toronto. I personally welcome the idea and have been concidering going back to school at the university of Toronto to study marine science. Its a complete 180 from my studies in electro-mechanical engineering/robotics but it has actually got me pretty excited and looking forward to the possibilities in front of us.

Ill try and snap and FTS soon for you guys but no coral shots as it is pretty sad right now.

Ok, I got the ball rolling again! SPS are starting to get their polyps and color back SLOWLY! I spoke too soon about being algae free... I have an attack of bubble algae but I can live with that.

I re-scaped the tank to get better flow and more light to lower portions of the rock work. I loved the old scape so much so this wasn't easy but I think that once the corals fill in it will look stellar.

I lost the tenius and the hoeki but magaged to pull most sps from the dead, this is my best recovery from a crash so I'm happy with the progress. Once the sps start healing up and taking off ill take some underwater photos.

Looks pretty bare with just three fish, in due time... Please comment on the scape

excuse the micro bubbles, the aqua scape putty is making my skimmer go bonkers

Hello Kevin,
Great recovery bro!!
Hold back on adding fishes till ur algae free. Continue wet skimming.

Aquascape looks cool. Especially the coral prop thingy :D. Once the corals grow on its gonna look the torch of statue of liberty minus Miss(or is it Mrs.? :D)
Liberty.
Cool!!
