Acrylic top/shield?

Hello,

I started a new tank. It is acrylic and came with a thin clear acrylic cover for it. Do I need to use this? I was just thinking it may be blocking light. I have 2 250W DE MH and actinics so splashing isn't a real big deal. What do you guys think? Pros/cons?

con---big one: overheating. You're not saying size, or your latitude, but with mh lights, a submerged pump, etc, you're going to spike a temp high enough to kill your corals. Plus overheating in an acrylic tank can start it to bow.

I have a 54g with a sump, mh [1] and run at 80 degrees with no lids at all.

I'm a little bewildered by your statement that you "have 2 250w...mh and actinics so splashing isn't a real big deal"---since if splash hits the mh bulbs, they may shatter and harm your tank.

A little clearer picture would help.

Sorry, I guess my statment may have been a little vague. The Mh are double ended so they are behind a glass shield already, and they are 12" above the water along with the actinics. So there really isn't much worry about the splashing.

I am also running a large chiller so I feel the temp should remain in check. What might be benefits to running without the sheild? Do you think that I will have a great deal more evaporation?
