ADA 120-P + Elos Mini dual NPS tank journal

I really enjoy looking at your tank.

Not sure if this will make any sense, have a headache, but is it possible that they use the nitrates for chemical building blocks and that even at your levels it is still within a normal range?

If you got to the nitrate threshold then you would start to see issues like reduced growth or polyp extension etc. Sort of a too much of a good thing deal.

Again it is a beautiful tank and wish you continued success with it.

Hey guys, my tank has been featured in UltraMarine magazine, "UK's most in-depth marine resource."

I had never seen this magazine before until it arrived by royal mail today. The layout and design of this publication is hands down way ahead of any other reef magazine out there. Don't get me wrong, I love CORAL magazine too :)

Its very flattering to be in the same issue as some really amazing tanks around the world. I highly recommend you guys go out and grab a copy, or order it online - and not just for the article on my tank! But, wow, I got a full 6 pages and it is awesome to see some of my photos blown up on print. I only wish I had my mom take the photos for me as she is semi-pro.

Hi uhuru,

Just wanted to say that your tank and methods are truly awesome!

When I do setup a NPS tank, if it looks even half as good, I'd consider it a grand success.

Thanks Bello, I'm flattered!

I have made some changes to the ADA tank. I've replaced the T5 lighting with 2 par38 LED spotlights. I've also covered the overflow with black pvc, and added a black background. The tank looks much cleaner this way and REALLY looks like a deep reef. I just want to dive into it. I will try to take pics soon!

Its difficult to take decent pics under LED lighting, especially when highlights and shadows are so pronounced like with spotlights. Also I have to wait until its dark out or theres too much reflection in the glass. I did shoot some video I'll start uploading now. If I have time I'll shoot some pics a little later.

ok, took some pics, need to upload and adjust white balance as the color is way off, give me a few minutes :)

in the meantime, enjoy this video:

The spotlight on the right is a Grassy LeDio 21w from Japan and its freaking awesome. I got it on sale from Aquatouch, unfortunately they aren't bringing it in anymore.

That is crazy nice Mike, I'd say you changed a few things. A couple of questions please? What temp are you running now? Have you found any relief from the nitrates and phosphates using the pellets? Thanks.

Thanks Don. I'm running the tank between 73-74 now. I will slowly bring it up to 76 by summer, and back down to 73 by winter next year.

I haven't noticed any decrease in nitrates or phosphates on test kits, but I have noticed a decrease in nuisance algae both in this tank and the fuge. I also decreased my daily water change amount a little bit. I'm still adding more biopellets, need to order more. I bet for my system I could run 2-3L of pellets and still have plenty of nutrients for my seagrasses to grow with. Right now I'm only at 1L.

If it makes you feel any better at the level of food I have to put into the water to keep the polyps out on my chironephthya I am running 1 1/2 L to keep my nitrates around 2. I will say this, all my chili corals are shut down at that level. Oh the dumbness of keeping sps and azoox corals.

I Also find my nitrates fluctuate up to 5 ppm then back down with the phosphates doing the same but opposite. Makes me think the bacteria that consume nitrates grow until they run out of food then the phosphate eating bacteria take over until they run out and the nitrates are again rising; and so on and so on.

Thanks for the info. I am running my temp at 77 and thinking about bring it down to 76 but I'm worried that would be good for the azoox and lps stuff but might be too cold for my sps. oh the dilemmas.

So what % water change are you doing now?
