Urggg. i really need to start injecting caffine directly into my fingers in the morning to get a jump start on my typing:hmm3:

You almost need something in the shots to give it size perspective.

I keep going back to the shots with your wife and kids in it. Amazing. :D

You are moving right along. Thank you so much for the link to weatherson's tank. His project is essentially the same as mine except a bit smaller. I have to do the same things to get my tank going.--J

manike: I agree, I noted that the pictures just don't show that the rock pieces are that big and that the tank is 8' long.

jnarowe: Yeah wetherson is a really bad influence on others wallets:)

NexDog: So everyone is back to picking on the special kid:lol:

Well his project is quite nice. Did you check out the TOTM yet? That guy is insane. The fish room equipment really borders on straight-jacket. WOW!

jnarowe: I am hoping on reading it tonight. Buttoned up working on the tank a little while ago and ordered some goodies for the tank. weatherson definately impresses me by his level of know-how and production of a lot of stuff himself.

Picked up a Foxface and a Naso. I figured the tank should be ready for them after 6 weeks of quarantine:). I also splurged and picked up a green long tentacle plate coral, some polyps, green frogspawn and a favites:) Should all be here on Friday!

Foxfaces are rad! So do you QT the corals too, or just pop them in the main tank?

That's quite a jump start to your reef! What about nutriens for the corals? Will there be enough accumulated in the tank by then? Are you growing any food for your tank?

What size tank will you use for the QT? I have a 2.5, 10, and 29 as extra tanks right now and I am using the 10 to QT 2 really screwed up Gouramis from an LFS (impulse buy). They have some kind fungus and I am really ****ed at myself for buying them. They may end up as popcicles.--J

PS. Our local Reef LFS just reopened in a new location. I went on coupon day to check him out. He is a really nice guy and generally carries very high quality fish & corals. It's always tough to start up a business like that, but he certainly takes care of his customers and his product. He had a mammoth prototype skimmer built by IAP. It is very similar to another brand, stood about 7-8' tall, and was completely saturated with tiny air bubbles. Scum was very wet and light colored, but since there was virtually no bio-load until late the previous evening, there's no way to judge how it skims.

jnarowe: Yeah I have always liked the Foxface. Wanted one for a few years now... Same with the Naso.

My quarantine tank is 55 gallons and sits above the sump in the wetroom. Been having a sponge going for a few weeks now, so I should be ready. I also just read and printed off a guide for hyposalinity and am going to give that a try this go around. I learned my lesson about quarantining fish after I lost my white cheek, a coral beauty and 6 black bar chromis after listening to the LFS say "been here eight weeks and eating good, been by themselves the whole time". I had velvet come in on my white cheek, everyone showed signs of infection two days later, the white cheek being the first and before I could get my quarantine tank up I lost the tang and the beauty. Then the chromis' died in the q-tank. So never ever again will I go w/o quarantining:)

And I checked out the tank of the month.... Wow:inlove:

BTW.. A quick update for anyone interested in the heat issues I experienced the first day this was up and running.

I found that a series of events; room getting five degrees warmer than usual due to unseasonable temperatures mixed with the fact somehow I left the return flow from the sump WAY down seems to be what caused the issue. First I measured the sump temp, which was 76.9, and the main display was 80 something so I turned the flow back up to about 3X. Since then the tank has stayed very stable between 77.9 and 79.7. No additional fans have been added and now the fans I have are barely running.

As far as equipment goes, things are running fairly well. The skimmer is doing its job, but I have had to get used to and continue tinkering with it. Not surprising as this is my first becket skimmer. I had it skimming a little too wet over the past few day and was pulling out stuff that was not too dark. Last night I cleaned it out and backed it off some and this morning I noted that the foam is darker. Probably right on schedule for the maturity level or lack there of for the tank.

I've got the lighting schedule backed off a hair, 10 hours of VHO and 1.5 hours with the MH going:D

I insulated the pipes in the room and now you can barely hear the tank in the house. The wet room is another story and I may do a few drain mods later to quiet that area down a bit. All and all though I cannot complain at this point...

How do you control your QT? Is it just a manual separate system, or is it tied into a tank controller?

All sounds good, but I think you really need to create a wider margin on your tank temp control. If environmental temp. is making the tank temp swing, that could cause serious problems as I am sure you know. You don't want to come home one day and find the tank at 85F+!! From personal experience, I know that will kill stuff off quickly. The good side of that is that the higher temp. will rid your tank of bristle worms.:D

jnarowe: The Q tank is a separate system running on the most basic and simplistic of systems. A heater, HOT Magnum canister filter and small light (rarely used). I have a couple pieces of PVC for hiding and thatââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s it.

The system balanced out at about 78.9-79.3 in reality. I posted the broad parameters that the AC Jr. recorded over the past few days. As far as the temp swing in the house is concerned, is because the AC/heat is off. Nothing is balancing the temp in the house and the kids left a ton of drapes open which really took the temp of the house up having the sun beating down on the windows all day. That problem is now fixed. I was planning on lowering the temp at which the fans kick on for the headspace ventilation, but was running a bit of an experiment over the past few days to see where the natural and ambient temps would fall. I believe everything is manageable now:) It just took some trouble shooting... After I finish up some more stuff today, I'm going to tweak the AC a tad more and I'll report back on the system stability as things progress

The goodies came today and everyone is being acclimated! The Naso and the Foxface look really healthy. Or at least as far as I can tell through the bag. Everyone is getting ready for the Q-tank!

LOL. Sorry no pics tonight. It's one of "those nights" at hop's house. Kids are their friends and the wife is out picking up dinner and movies. I'm getting the candles ready and surprising the wife with some stuff. I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow:)
