adding ammonia

doing a little reading tonight about the cycle process, and i had a question?
can you add ammonia to a tank that has fish in it?

Yes you can.
Is it recommended to do that? Hell no!

Please....never do that, you won't get any benefit from it.

Yes, you can add ammonia to a tank if the tank is empty and cycle that way. It's a proven method instead of adding a shrimp or some other ammonia source.

Since you have Fish in the tank... NO, NO and NO!!!! Ammonia even at lower levels is highly toxic to fish and corals.

Ammonia is poisonous at certain levels to fish and humans,etc....
Reach that level (concentration) and they will die..

But ammonia is always being "added" to a tank via fish poop/decay/death,etc.. Its just in small enough concentrations and its being turned into nitrites/nitrates,etc.. fast enough that the level is never toxic enough..

Now "why" are you asking this question.. "what" was your goal or reason you thought of doing so..

Just wanted to know if you did not properly cycle your tank and already added fish could you add a small dose of ammonia to help with cycle

If there were fish already in the tank, they would be adding ammonia to the tank themselves. If the tank isn't cycled properly, and the fish don't die, they will continue to cycle the tank. That is obviously not the recommended method, but adding more ammonia would surely kill the inhabitants if dosed to detectable levels for any amount of time (wouldn't take much or long).

No, if u didn't cycle tank properly and added fish in it already then best thing to do is take fish out and cycle tank. Shortcut method is to add recommend dose of seachem stability in it and help seed bacteria.
Fish are already adding ammonia to tank and cycle has begun there is no stopping it even if all fish die (highly non recommended)

Do why do you think you cycled "wrong"..?
A tank will naturally cycle on its own without us doing anything.. It may just take a bit longer than ghost feeding or ammonia dosing or adding live rock,etc..
