Adding fish ?

Right now i have a 29g tank set up with 2 f. perculas, 1 blue tang, and a yellow tang. Do you think it would be possible to add a Mandarin Fish or since the already have the yellow tang it is to late

well it is indeed too late for the yellow tang. Because it is an open water loving fish, it will die very soon, probably infecting your tank with ich which may knock off another few fish. That is, if the blue tang doesnt knock off first.

You cannot have a mandarin because they do not eat flake and your tank is too small to be able to reproduce enough food for it and it will starve and die within four or five months.

Doesnt matter. Based on your tangage you will probably get it anyway. Ever consider a shark? Maybe a whale shark? They are small for a few days too.

Tangs need to be in larger aquariums ... 1 tang to a 75 gallon tank at LEAST but bigger is better. These are not small aquarium fish and you will learn the hard way. Unfortunately the fish are going to have to give their lives to teach this lesson.

Sad.

from what i heard on boards here, i think the tangs definetlly have to be in at least a 75 gal tank. you might want to read up on that.

^^^^^^^^^^

What fishinchick said....

and... That's just sick and wrong IMO, get rid of the tangs... and don't buy a mandarin till you have a much larger tank... that has been setup atleast a year.

Please research....

fishinchick
can you be any ruder to this poor person. this is there first sw tank, and people do make bad mistakes.. gez

i was thinking about the Mandarin Fish, also, and i only have a 20 gal. ive been reading and they require lots of live rock to eat off of, and live food you have to feed them, the harldy ever except flake foods. so i knocked that one out.

Hey man....

I have a 29g too, with a royal gramma and a clown. That's probably all I'm going to put in there, as there is already enough bioload. That's a few too many fish to put in there, especially the tangs. They get big, fast.

Just my $.02.

Yes I could have been more rude but chose not to be.

Blatant disregard for learning about the animals before randomly purchasing them is not responsible and costs the animal it's life.

HOLY CRAP 2 tangs in a 30? Didn't you think that may have been a bit much when you were out fish looking. Any book you read that is up todate or 2 years old tells you that tangs require a minimum of 75g and that is bare min. The yellow can go in a 75 but the blue needs at least 100. That is what the books I have say anyways. The Tang Police are gonna flame this thread to death.. BE PREPARED!!

as for the mandarine fish. NO WAY LEAVE IT AT THE STORE AND SMACK YOUR SELF REALLY HARD IN THE HEAD WITH A 2X4 EVERYTIME YOU THINK ABOUT GETTING ONE.

Ok I think i got my point across. if not... you need to do more reading and research before continueing in this hobby

cheer,

Troy

Man, I'm glad to see that some folks here have NEVER made mistakes with their tanks and can justify being rude to someone new to the hobby. There's no need for that. He can easily take those fish back and trade in once he has the knowledge as to what fish are appropriate for his tank. Help him out, but don't run him off.

If any research would have been done this mistake would have not been made. And there is a differance between rude and speaking the truth.

cheers,

Troy

People come here to look for advice, and many of these people who are asking for advice are newbies, considering that this subforum is labeled "New to the Hobby". There is a lot of false information on the internet and a lot of false information that the LFS tells people. Considering your condescending attitude towards this individual and your 15+ years of experience in reef tanks you should be very familair with the false information available on the web.

So, as a favor, can you please take your head out of your egoistic *** a bit and take a bit more friendly and possibly a more open minded approach to the newbie?

If you can do that... that would be great.

I've done a lot of research and read a lot, however I've made mistakes based off of information that I have read, and information from other people... much like individuals like yourself. People make mistakes, a lot of LFS lie to customers for money, and a lot of people speak through their own personal experience or other experiences. There is a difference between rude and "speaking the truth", however, you can speak the truth without being rude, and this thread is definatly not implying it. I hope you can see the logical difference between those two...

Kingtoad,
If you or anyone have done any research on reefcentral or any of the other marine hobbist forums which they are several. You would know that this topic has been talked about more then I even want to research for you. So don't come in here telling us that we are rude when you need to pull your self absorbed head out of your *** and do some reading. Granted mistakes will be made that is to be expected. When they are to this magnatude when the info is out there how many hundreds of times. It's kinda hard to be sympathetci or even polite. You ever think that we who have been the hobby for multipul years are increadibly irritated by this type of action. ???
Maybe it is because we care.. to much ..... maybe... but never the less researsh is always a good thing

Ouch!
I made some pretty stupid mistakes because I trusted the people at my lfs--bought a beautiful carpet anemone for a new 29g. full of live rock. The way I saw it, they had years of experience (mom and pop doing business for over 40 years). However, I soon learned to come here and ask questions before doing anything, in addition to the reading I do. Coming here was safe.

I sure hope mario understands that the vast majority of people would have simply told him to take the fish back until he researched more. And the wolf-pack mentality of those who jumped right in after the first . . . Shame on you.

I sincerely hope no one here thought my post was rude... If so, I am sorry. But it makes me feel very sad to see people keeping fish that are slowly dying...

yogi would this be a good time to point out your signature line quote or should I just go find something else to do?

It's not pack mentality - it's complete lack of caring about the needs.

"Well it's little now" like a tang stays little forever. I just talked to a guy on the phone 45 minutes ago that wanted to buy a small dogface puffer. He asked how big it would get and when I told him he said it would not be good to keep in his 20 gallon tank. This guy is a new hobbyist too. I told him he needs to fully research animals before he buys them because that 2" fish will be well over 10" in a matter of time.

He fully agreed.

Moving on from this thread because arguing over the fact that he knew nothing about the animals he bought has no means to an end. My statements stand.

Hopefully he'll learn to be careful by unfortunately learning the hard way.

Cya.

You completely missed the point. But if it makes you feel better to get the upperhand, then by all means, you got it.

fishinchick,
That new hobbyist was lucky to have someone who would talk to him for 45 minutes. Obviously, Mario did not. He only had the word of someone whom he trusted because they worked in a fist store. It would have been nice if he had left the site with the impression he, too, could come to you (or anyone else on this site). Now he may just continue to make mistakes.
