Adrian and I Frantically Testing Water

OK, I have the CB, but haven't used it, so do I or don't I, guys? Geesh. Everything is much improved today, which is leading me more and more towards stray voltage, however, after a nice session cleaning some algae off the glass I realized my pump had died, so Adrian is off to KR for a Maxijet 600 with the rotator. If it's not one thing it's another.

Heck, even the Zoas are now happy. Electro-shock therapy for aquarium depression?

Oh, and he's also going to get cheato for chamber 1. How long should I keep the charcoal in the tank, btw? I don't "normally" run it with charcoal, but always on hand in case of nights like last night.

Keep your carbon 24/7, but change it monthly. Use the Kent CB to keep calcium between 400 and 450, and alk between 7 and 10.

When did the pump stop working? Is it possible that it over heated or stopped and and caused the die off?

I know but it is easier for a basic nano. I want to see how you make your DIY stuff. Its taking a lot of the CB to keep my Alk and Cal where I want. LPS and coraline are growing though.

yeah jay kent cb broke my heart also a two part works much better for me
harder to over dose and keeps the levels steady as long as you dose it right .

i guess i dont like useing all these products not knowing what they have in them with the two part you know what it is and nothing else extra.

yeah but not like you get from twopartsolution with them i know exactly what it is because i mix it my self and alot cheaper.
just me i guess.

but in a fix like what trish needed cb is good to go

Nope. Stopped this afternoon after I was cleaning everything up.

I now have a Maxijet with rotator.

I actually decided not to get the Kent CB because it was two part, I decided on the Kent Liquid Reactor, which I was "told" was basically the same as parts A AND B. I do still have the receipt, if I screwed up again. It's been that kind of week. Or I could try the Liquid Reactor and see if my results vary any from yours, Scott?

I was told to remove the charcoal, somewhere in the Nano forum. Right now I couldn't remember why I was told that, but will stick with your advice here and keep the Charcoal in now. I believe I was told because it would take out things like any "good" additives, or meds. Of course I'm learning there are pretty much NO good additives if you do your water changes, which I do religiously.

Final question for the night, now that the "nightmare" is over, and things are slowly, very slowly mending. Any other advice besides take it slow. I got that part. Ok, I got that. :P

I do want to say thank you one more time as the worst is most certainly past, and I did my first DIY mod with the pump. Ok ok. It wasn't rocket science, but come on guys, my ego needs a boost this week.

Adrian is mending well, but let me convince him to go see our Doc tomorrow morning. He's open Saturday mornings.

He would also personally like to say to each and every one of you that was online for me, "Thank you for keeping my wife SOMEWHAT sane during her tank crisis. I only had to use 10 or 12 of those little blue pills. It WAS the blue ones, right?" :fun5: :twitch:

 :wavehand:

I dont see a problem running charcoal all the time if you swap it out for fresh monthly. I run ChemiPure and Purigen all the time. In a nano they are good for several months but I wash them our regularly.
I have seen the liquid reactor, the problem I think I would have with it is not being able to raise one without raising the other. Such as if my Cal is ok but Alk is a lil low with a 2 part you can adjust each. I am hoping Jay is gonna give a demo of his DIY 2 part soon. Then I will switch to making my own.

its not hard at all sperry
very ease to mix and the cost is 75% less then buying the all ready mix
sets . like c-balance it cost 12 something on fosters site for two 9oz bottles . i got a gal mix of each for 9 dollars and it came with a bag of magnesium.
did you check out the two part site?

Yes I looked at it. Jay does a DIY fro Dow flakes and baking soda. I know roughly how to make it but would like to see it done before I try it in my tank.

I'll be selling 1 gallon bags of Dowflakes and Magflakes at the frag swap, along with a page of instructions. I'll bring Mrs. Wages pickling lime (kalkwasser) too. The remaining ingredients (baking soda and epsom salts) are readily available.

I'll also have bottles of chelated iron, the only other supplement I use in my tanks, to promote macroalgae (chaetomorpha) growth, and bottles of hydrochloric acid, which is used for cleaning pH and ORP electrodes. I might have pH calibration solutions... not sure about that one yet.

I'll be interested in learning more about the DIY 2 part 2. Good point about wanting to only raise one without hte other. I WILL keep ya posted on how it does.
