Advanced Acrylics Scamming

Just don’t pay in full in advance. If u leave a small deposit, the work gets done much quicker. Speaking from experience...

yup... dealt with John for many years and had good experience.. then he tried to rip me off on my largest order (near 10k $$$), I paid in full seeing how experience were great before.. some items took over 1 year to deliver. the sump arrived leaking. some parts never came. And he made all types of excuses including: delivery truck got jacked with all my items... delivery driver disappeared.. delivery driver died.. bla bla bla... he then let his employees finish some of the work that was promised and it came out like turd..

in the end I got a portion of the money back and took my business else where..

John makes good stuff. has terrible customer service

Have bought many sumps and tanks and ato reservoirs over the years and never had an issue. Sometimes i order on tuesday and get the text to pick up on saturday of the same week. No complaints here.

I’ve never bought from John but I do have one of his PVC sumps.

Seems like almost everyone deals with AA loves his work... almost

But it also seems that once or twice a year I see a thread come through here where the level of poor quality and poor customer service defies absurdity. And those seem to mostly be bigger jobs.

Like I said, I have a AA sump right now, it’s my 2nd one and I love it but I don’t know if I’d hazard the risk of buying anything from AA directly that’s not already in inventory.

He refinished my 200 gallon, built me a sump, 2 protein skimmer stands and 3 dosing reservoirs. All top notch work. I wonder if things have changed?

John built a custom sump and custom CA reactor for me, was a pleasure to do business with. This was going on 10 years ago however. I've been debating on a new custom sump, maybe sometime next year, and was going to call AA. Interested to see how this shapes up, or if more recent customers have had issues. Maybe too much work for their shop now?

Hello - just wanted to share my experiences with Advanced Acrylic. I've been a customer of Jon's (AA) for many years, purchasing a few tanks and sumps over the past decade. My most recent PVC sump was purchased this month. His work and craftsmanship have always been amazing. Delivery time has been fairly accurate.

To the OP, I've been in similar situations and it is frustrating, just keep on him and hopefully it works out!

Wait, you ordered a pvc sump this month and got it already?

Beware of Advanced Acrylics!

I paid John Hoang of Advanced Acrylics in Orange, CA $4,150 in January for an aquarium and stand and later added $150 for an upgrade. It's October, no product, only lies on the phone and in text messages. Now he has blocked my calls.

To be clear I haven't ordered anything from Advanced Acrylics. FWIW, I've seen on R2R Tenecor appears to have shut their doors again after new owners took over the business. Over the decades I've seen a lot of aquarium companies come and go and the issues here and posted about Tenecor may be indicative of another slump in the hobby.

All my dealings with AA have been great and the vast majority of customers are thrilled with their work. That said, every year is seems there are 1 or two threads about how someone got completely dropped out. It’s bizarre.

Did you pay in full? I only made that mistake once.. and it took months to get what I ordered. After that I left a tiny deposit and things go done really quick. Just watch out for the ... Oh discount rate is only for pay in full.
Yea, that seems like a common thread with dissatisfied AA customers over the years, It’s people who paid in advance.

He's so unpredictable and untrustworthy. One thing he does is make up bogus promises. That's enough for me to give my business to someone whose word is trustworthy.
