advantages of quart sleeve in UV

What do you know are the disadvantages of a UV without quartz sleeve?

The bulb is cooler so the output is reduced?

Water is heated up to a greater extent?

Can't take greater pressure because the glass on the bulb is thin? Only important in cleaning procedure as UV should not have high pressure associated with high flow.

Are you saying putting the UV bulb directly in contact with the water?? The sleeve is there to protect the bulb from thermal shock and the/ballast/tank and you from electrical shock should the bulb break.

A crystal/Quartz sleeve protects the bulb from the water. It prolongs the bulb life by shielding it from potential water intrusion. It also simplifies maintenance. When changing the bulb, you don't need to worry about water draining out. The crystal sleeve also prevents calcium deposits from building up on the bulb itself. It also provides for a larger surface area for the UV to contact the water. The crystal sleeve adds cost and complexity to a UV filter but all higher end UV filters include a crystal sleeve for the reasons mentioned above as well as other reasons. Only cheap and inferior UV filters come without the sleeve IMO. I wouldn't run a UV filter without a crystal sleeve.

It does not use HID ballast.

It uses the same ballast for normal output fluorescent.

Yes, many UV's do not have quartz sleeves.

The bulb itself is quartz but often thinner.

I have a couple that are without quartz sleeve. I have stopped using them since I have a few that do have.

I had thought of about using the quartz glass from spent G15T8 as quartz sleeve and convert to T5 bulbs. I have given this idea to rest for now because may be such quartz will be too thin and strengthwise unsound.

Quartz sleeve should not be that expensive but they are.

There are no decent aquatic UV's without quartz sleeves. Those sleeves really do make a substantial impact in performance and safety.

They are much, much thicker than light bulb quartz envelope.
