Advice for Sump TOO MUCH CONFUSION

Hi,
So as a newbie to the hobby I do my research. I decided on a sump and made one. Just to visualise it is 24" wide with 4 sections. 1x5", 1 x1.5" (bubble trap), main section 14" last section 5"

So naturally I have my return pump in the main section. I put the heaters, skimmer some Chaeto in the big section. Well lit with LED.s on timer.

But there is so much conflicting information I would just like to get a simple answer from people who know and trying to sell me something.

So what should I add if anything? Sponges, bio balls, matrix, aeration?

Thank you.

Huh? Why is the return pump in the main section?

I think it's more typical that the return would be in the last section. It's the only section that should fluctuate - and where you would put your top off device if you chose to have one.

How are you keeping the algae out of the skimmer pump?

I'm a bit worried about the cheato being in the same compartment with the return pump.

My thoughts are that the cheato will get sucked into the pump and deposited back into the display.

Oopps, I misread that. Cheato will be in the big section. I would still try and separate it from the skimmer so it doesn't get sucked into the pump.

You could make a basket out of egg crate or mesh to hold the cheato.

The two things that do well in a sump. Cheato and spare rock/bits/rubble. And a third---that furry crab that hitchhiked in: nice place for things that would work mayhem in the main tank but that there's no reason to kill.
