Advice on Kole Yellow Eye

I have been wanting to get a Kole Yellow Eye for awhile now. A LFS has one in stock that looks like it has been beat up a bit. The tail looks a little shredded (not terrible though), and on one side it has a wound/scar. Otherwise it is fat and appears healthy. They are willing to give me a great price on the fish since it is a little beat up. My question is will that wound/scar recover? The guy at the LFS said he felt that it would over time with quality food. I plan to QT the fish by itself for 6 - 8 weeks. The hard part is I am not sure if it is a recent wound, or if it is an actual scar. My experience is very limited in this area. I also plan to observe it eat prior to making the purchase. Thanks for the input.

Is it a wound or scar, there is a big difference? Wounds will heal and scars will fade providing proper nutrition. Depending on the severity of how beat up the fins are it could take many wks if not months for the fins to fully heal. It's up to you on the purchase, I'm assuming you have seen the fish feed and it is feeding well?

I am not sure if it is a wound or a scar - if I had to guess I would say it looked more like scar, but could be wrong. The tail seemed to be the only fin with damage, and it wasn't too bad. The price is a bonus, but I am also thinking that I can provide a QT and the time to make sure the fish recovers. If I purchase it, I will make sure that it is eating. Right now I am on the fence with this fish, and probably will let this one go.

If you're wondering whether the fish will recover and be healthy, what you've described does not sound like it should be an impediment. As long as the wound is healed or is at least clean looking, I think your LFS is correct - with time and care, it'll likely heal and you probably won't even see it. The fins should heal unless the damage is really extensive.

I wouldn't pass up a fish I've been waiting for on that basis, but that's really an individual decision.

Doesn't sound that bad to me. Ime damaged finds heal fast. I have a tang with a scar on its body, I believe from an accidental nip by my puffer, things get crazy at feeding time in their tank. Most of the time can't see the scar, but sometimes his color lightens up a little & you can see it.

I have a Picasso trigger with a cleft lip but it doesn't impede him in any way. He is healthy and eats well. The scar just gives him a wild smile :D

Thanks for the information. I am going to see if they still have the fish, and get a second look at him. If I still don't believe it to be too bad, and he is eating I will probably make the purchase.

I went back to the LFS, and looked at the tang again. He already looked way better after a few days. He ate like a pig right then, and wasn't hiding as much as before. When I asked the owner if he would still honor the price his employee offered to me because of the scratch (the way he described it), he said that was pretty cheap. In the end he gave me the deal, and I believe I made the right choice. The tang has been in QT for 4 days now, and is doing great. Thanks again for the input from all.
