AEFW Eggs???

Never had them before. Thankfully my tank is only about 10 months old and I have mostly frags. Been a successful SPS keeper before but have been having some trouble with new tank. Definitely had some ALK fluctuations over the past few months (Dosers not working correctly). For about the past month or so I've had parameters pretty stable. Recently purchased approx. 20 assorted SPS frags from a couple of different places. Some BN's, Pocci's, Stylos, and Acros. Acro frags would be fine for about a week or two then suddenly RTN overnight. A couple of Acros I transferred over from old tank held their own until recently. Started losing color and STN'ing. Noticed this at the base of one of them this evening. From pics I've seen it certainly looks like aefw eggs. Just wanted to see what some others had to say.

Sad thing is is that each new shipment of corals was dipped in Bayer. Next time quarantine after dip. If it is in fact aefw I'm dumping all acros and going fallow. How long to be safe? 6, 8 weeks? This sucks!!! Sorry about the pic. Best I can get with cell phone.

Thanks in advance.

Need to inspect after dipping. I use a 20x loupe to check the whole frag for eggs. If I see some, I will scrap or cut off that section.

Yea thoes are aefw eggs, just dip on e a week for 5+ weeks and scrape all eggs. K need to dump everything especially when frags are so easy to dip.

Thanks everyone. It's what I expected so no real surprise. I already have a QT set up that I'm going to transfer them over to. What's left anyway. I'll follow the regimen that you posted the link to sahin. I initially used Bayer to dip the incoming corals but obviously was not careful enough or did something wrong. Lesson learned. We'll see what we can save.

I don't think Bayer kills eggs. Couple egg must have gotten through

Yup. I should have removed them from their plugs and re-mounted them. Instead I took a toothbrush to the plugs and likely missed some eggs as you said.

That's what scares me about frags, other reefers plugs. There's a few out there I know are very on top of things, but if I were to go to an unknown for a frag I'd be dipping heavy, lightly scrubbing, and ABSOLUTELY replacing the plug.

That is VERY hard with Zoa's of course -_-

You are on it. Remove them from the plugs and rocks for sure.

Usually you can see AEFW floating around in the dip water which can give you pause and take more action. Weird that you did not see any.

Again my neglect. I should have poured the milky white water slowly out to get a closer look at the remains in the bottom of the container. Stupid me never thought l'd get them if I went through the dip process. I will be much more vigilant in the future for sure.

For me losing some frags and a couple of small older colonies certainly hurt but is nothing compared to what others may risk losing if precautions are not taken. Don't think you can't get them? Dip and quarantine if possible. I've learned my lesson and will be from now on.

Can anyone recommend a good magnifying glass that would spot them? Would any decent one work or are there some better than others? Strength, size, etc. I have no idea what I'd even be looking for.
Thanks.

Use something like CoralRx first. It stays clear and will knock off most of the junk and then you see what you are in for. It will knock AEFW off of the SPS. You can do a milky bayer after that. I usually will only do a bayer if I get stuff other than pods from the CoralRx or if I got some frags from an unknown source.

I use a viewing thingy so that I can look from the bottom up too. You should be able to see them with your naked eye under strong light especially from the bottom.

Can you elaborate more on exactly what a viewing thingy is?

Just food for thought !

Way back in the day when I joined this site, It was very common for people to do a quick swish around FW, even with SPS. Every once in a blue moon I still do this, it nearly instantly kills or stuns Inverts.

I'm not suggesting anyone try this, but so far it's been 100% safe for all the corals I tried it on (I'm talking a 3-5 second dip, not minutes)
