i HAVE A FEMALE THAT IS ACTIVELY DIGGING A WHOLE IN THE SAND, THEN LAYS THERE FOR 30 SECONDS APPEARING TO LAY EGGS THEN FINS OVER A LITTLE SAND THAN THE MALE SWIMS OVER THEN FINS THE AREA....AND THEY HAVE BEEN REPEATING THIS ACITIVITY FOR THE LAST HALF HOUR, i THOUGHT CLOWNS ONLY LAID ON CLEANED OFF ROCKS......IS THIS SPAWNING ACTIVITY OR A PRELUDE, JUST HAD ANOTHER BATCH OF BANGAI CARDINALS TWO DAYS AGO!

could be spawning behavior tough to say. Any pics would be great. What type of clowns do you have. Clowns will lay on any hard surface, tile, rock, aquarium glass, sole of shoes, etc.

lol.

what we are refering here to is a true percula, mine just hapened to visit Africa for a few months while on vacation with me, but very litttle information on the question I posed.....we could play trivial pursuit though and put my PHD in marine zoology to work if you'ld like? woth an emphasis on tropical icthyology and two years of coral study in the Entiwitok Islands

I thought this pretty much answered the question....But.....

Are they spawning...really difficult to say without a picture. If they are spawning you should observe the fish doing very unusual quivering and even swimming upside down while laying next to each other.

Are you noticing any eggs?

Are you noticing the clowns protective of this area?

At what time of day or night does this behavior happen?

To me it sounds more like either pre-spawning behavior, or clowns being clowns. It is pretty hard to miss them actually spawning, should be able to notice the egg "tube" (( I always forget the real term )) coming down from the female.
