Very nice...yes I can see how that center brace would make things difficult.

yep its a nightmare, if i would have took it out before adding water and used some strengtheners the other way i could have fitted a 30-40 gallon rectangular sump with no issues, but like everything we do we do it the hard way:lol: still its running now and im glad you have a decent set up, looks good and i will follow the thread:)

You can really see its "bunny ears" in person. Plus the thing moves like a bat outta hell! It's doing a great job on the GHA! Might just have to keep it around and give it sheets of nori to consume...

Livestock Update

Livestock Update

The seahare continues to amaze us with its appetite for GHA, only a few tufts remain in the display and I'm sure it will get them before the week is out. We feel that the 10g Nano is likely too small for it so we'll have to take care of the GHA in there using different methods. It isn't really spreading and the chaeto seems to be growing more in that fuge so it may just need time to recover from the summer of neglect.

Our search for the first round of fish isn't going well. The LFS where we shop had a few very small mandarins a while back, but I still don't have the pod population where I would like it and I've decided to wait until I get the copepod culturing station running before adding a mandarin to guarantee with any certainty that it will not starve to death...especially if we're going to add a mated pair.

The online store that we shop at for livestock has a Randall's Shrimp Goby but no shrimps to go with it else I would be ordering it. They had a Yellowhead Jawfish a while back but I wasn't going to pay the shipping costs for just one fish.

It looks like we'll probably have to wait until the New Year to start adding our fish now... :( At least we have the snails and the seahare to look at in the tank.

its better to wait then lose them imdb, if your adding two mandarins then i agree you should wait untill you get the station going. jawfish are very cool looking, they have a black cap jawfish here at the lfs and its been there for 3 weeks and still doing good. if i had not bought some new coral he would already be in my Qtank.

Yep, I totally agree but it would be nice if we could add the other specimens in the "first wave"...

Since I've been feeding with phytoplankton on a regular basis the number of visable pods has exploded in both the display and the refugium, but I still want more. :) Also, having the ability to dump a full bottle of cultured copepods into the system once a week will be an awsome thing even with just one mandarin, it will think it has died and gone to Vegas; all you can eat copepod buffet for $0.99!

after adding the mandarin the pod population was fine in the tank, around three months in i saw it take a huge hit. he lost a bit of weight but then i noticed he was out looking for food during feeding time and he eats brine/mysis on a more consistant basis and he is nice and plump again. on occasion i swear i have seen him eat some formula one lol they are really fun fish to watch "crawl" around the rockwork.

ATO

ATO

I found a 6 gallon container that will work for an Auto Top Off Unit! :D $9.84 at Wal-mart.

I don't want to have to mod the container too much so it will likely have to be external and be able to lift the water. I'm thinking the Aqua Lifter pump from Oscar Enterprises.

Any ideas on what to use for a controller?

i have been looking at getting one of the following 3

jbj auto controller
reeffanatic
or the tunze osmolator

oh i didnt know they added that feature to the Elite....

edit: i wont buy a topoff system then i will look at buying either one of them sometime next year.

If you're talking about a Top Off controller, I like Melev's DIY. Whenever I order some float switches, I'll be hooking one up like that on my 30g tank.

I leave for a month and all hell breaks loose!!!

First I hear Rae’s terrible news about her father passing then I read the TJ was laid off and has already torn down and sold his tank. :(

The only good thing I saw before I stopped reading everyone else’s threads in fear of more bad news is that Leysa is finally able to post again.

Here at home, things could be a lot worse, considering the above. We seem to have a massive bubble algae bloom. The only thing we can think of is to add a couple Emerald Mythrax Crabs. Are there other options for getting rid of bubble algae?

I didn’t have time to do the scheduled water change before I left for training so I believe the tank desperately needs one. Nothing has been going in the tank for a while (the only thing we had been adding was phytoplankton) so things shouldn’t be too bad.

I’m going to do a 30% water change tomorrow, wait a few days then run a complete battery of tests to see if I need to do another one. Once I know the tank is in a decent state, I’ll pick up the Emerald Crabs and maybe a few more snails as I noticed one pop one of the bubbles and eat it yesterday.

Of course, J&L Aquatics has a Spikefin Goby (Discordipinna griessingeri) and Candy Cane Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus randalli) in stock right now but I don't want to order an $80 goby if the tank isn't in a good way...I'm calling them to see if they can put them on hold for me for a week or so.

Hopefully everyone else is okay and that their tanks are doing well.

I’ll keep you posted.

Chris

We aren't sure what this is but we've had it since we got the live rock...
