AGA92 Corner Reef Tank Build

Looks fat and happy! Is it eating prepared foods?
We put a few Formula One small pellets in and while he didn't eat them right away, we think he may have gotten to a couple of them eventually.

Here is the design I've done up for a canopy for the AGA92. We're hoping that my dad will be able to build it for us as he has the knowledge, experience, space, and tools.

We're looking at the CoralVue Lumen Bright Wide Mini Pendant with a 250watt Dimmable Electronic Ballast and ReefLux 250watt 12,000K Bulb. From what I've read, the light has to be at least 16" from the water surface, so that is what determines the height of the canopy.

We want the canopy to match the stock stand that we have.

On the stand, the top and bottom pieces are solid 2" x 1 ¼" oak, but to keep the weight (and costs) down, I figured ¾" plywood would do for the top and bottom of the canopy. I also figured this would make it easier to build; just cut out the shape, no need to shape the oak. I'm not sure what could be done to the top and bottom of the plywood so that the surface is oak to match the stand but I figure a roll of ¾" oak veneer could be used on the edges; if such a thing exists.

The 1" x 4"'s on the stand are notched so that they are partially over the top and bottom pieces, for the canopy though, I thought just screwing them to the plywood would be fine, especially since the crossbar on the top would block some of them.

I'm sure the ¾" plywood crossbar would be enough to support the weight of the ballast and reflector but I thought "better safe than sorry", so I added some 1" x 1"'s to reinforce the crossbar to prevent sagging.

The inside will be painted white (Klitz epoxy?). I'm also thinking that having two temperature controlled variable speed fans with an open top will help keep heat to a minimum.

I'm not sure about what sizes are available so I guessed at some of the stuff; like the oak panelling for the back.

I'm sure the whole thing could be done using pine or some other wood and it would match okay...so if the cost is too much, we might do that.

I called the local pet superstore to see how much a new stand would be, as we thought maybe that would be easier/cheaper, they said it was $720, so we won't be doing that...

Let me know what you think. We'd like to get this built before we order the light so that we don't have to have the light hanging from the ceiling (and have to turn it off when watching TV).

they have oak plywood sheets, its alot cheaper then strait up oak and a little more expensive then a plywood sheet. it has a thin sheet of oak ontop of the plywood you can sand and stain to match your stand

I figured there would be something like that but wasn't sure... :)

Perhaps that could be used in place of the 1"x4"'s too. :)

Just sent the design to my dad for his thoughts and an estimate on how much the material will be.

I'll keep you posted.

Already did on a local lumber store's website...I put together a quick price list:

• One F.S.RED OAK V.C. 3/4" SHOP $59.99 or F.S.RED OAK V.C. 3/4" PREMIUM $89.99
• 48’ of RED OAK S4S 1X4 @ $2.69/lf = $129.12
• One BEADBOARD OAK 4'x8'x5/32" $19.99

I couldn’t find the Oak Veneer for the edges of the top and bottom though.

So as low as $210 CAD...not too bad...

Blue Spotted Watchman Goby

Blue Spotted Watchman Goby

We added a Blue Spotted Watchman Goby yesterday. Haven't been able to get any pictures of him in the tank yet because he has been hiding. But I did get a couple of pictures while at the store:

Will post more pictures as soon as we have them.

The next addition, the Royal Gramma, will be in three or four weeks. Enough time to get the quarantine setup.

(Waving hand in a Jedi like motion)You saw that we quarantined the goby...

It finally came out from its hiding spot at the very back of the tank today. Here are the pictures we were able to get of it:

Here are some shots of the goby being cleaned by the cleaner shrimp:

Here is a video of the goby swimming around. That thing it picked up was an empty snail shell. The camera focused on the rocks behind it, but you still get the idea. :)

The stock light must go...

The stock light must go...

Well...pretty much all of the bubble algae that Kara so vigilantly removed has grown back; I'll post pictures later.

I've changed the light over the refugium from the "Current/Satellite Dual light hood with Dual Daylight 6,700k/10,000k and Dual Actinic 420nm/460nm with Lunar Light" that came with the LifeReefugium to a 5100K bulb like Melev runs. I figure we'll use the hood for quarantining coral.

I can't remember what type of bulb came with the AGA92 Stock Light, but I'm sure it's under 10,000K. I'm wondering if this may be one of the reasons for the rapid growth when all parameters are in check.

We're waiting to build the canopy before getting the new light, so I will have to get my Dad to commit to a deadline for it when him and my Mom visit this weekend.

Another option I have is to run some phosphate absorbing media and/or carbon in the Fluval 401 that I have in storage. Or I may have to reprioritize the budget and get the media reactors that I've been considering.

if you do use the fluval 401 make sure you clean it out often, alot of nasty stuff collects in there, i ran my rena 301 with no filters except the phosban media in it.

Great! (knock wood)

The mandarin is constantly finding and eating pods, the goby comes out to beg for food regularly, and the cleaner shrimp seems to be doing what cleaner shrimps do. We even saw the one armed emerald crab yesterday. We have lost a snail or two but other than that, everything is doing well.
