Hi Ed-

Yeah its just the price we pay to play the game. I personally think there was likely something wrong with the fish from the start or poor bagging. Too bad SDC won't own up to that. I am resigned to the fact we will probably never know the cause. Im not going to sweat $57.
As for the fish, it is still alive and kicking. It eats what it can stumble upon and seems to be getting stronger (lots more swimming around the fuge). I just don't know how it will survive long term without proper vision. Hopefully these new ones Jesus and I got are going to do just fine. We will keep you posted.

If the fish is eating and getting stronger, even though its eyesite doesnt seem to have returned, you can keep it alive. it will however require effort on your part.

Start by putting food in the same place every day. The sooner the fish recognizes that food can always be found in the same location it will begin to go there.
If possible, slowly try to get the fish to eat from your hands. Its sense of smell may be intact. If it starts to react when you put food in the tank, then it can most likely smell. If it cannot see, then it probably wont be able to view your hand/finger as a threat.

My fish eat from my hands. The one that is most adept at it is my Indo Pacific Regal Angel, but it has taught the others to do the same.

I started by hitting the food timer switch on the Tunze's, which shuts the pumps off for 10 minutes. I then began feeding my fish out of a turkey baster, (rods food, mysis, mysids, etc). The fish then began to associate my presence and the pumps being switched off with getting fed. After awhile, I began taking small strips of fresh scallop or shrimp and pressing them against my index finger and holding it barely underwater. At first the fish were scared and wouldnt come too close, but the scent of the food kept them curious. After awhile the food would fall off my finger tip and the fish closest to it got to eat. It wasnt long after that the Regal figured out that it actually pick the food off my finger tip. Thats how I feed her most often now. She's taught the other fish that they can do the same thing.

If you can get going with something like that on your tang, its definately got a fighting chance.

Nick

hey great setup agentSpS... seeing that you did good with 'invincible's(edward)' inspirational tank.

One question... what kind of screen/mesh is that on top of the tank? I want one to prevent my fish from carpet surfing  It already happened twice... I have the normal gutter guards but they are too flexible. I'd like a mesh that is rigid.

anyways keep up the good work

Hi Nick-

Thanks for the helpful info. I too have most of my fish eating from my hand or turkey baster. I have been trying to be consistent about where I place the food for the maculiceps. It helps that he is in my fuge with little competition for food. Fingers are crossed that he regains enough vision to be more self sufficient.

On a related note, I just acquired another Maculiceps. This one is much larger and absolutely exquisite. I hope to have some photos soon.

Hi Drama-

Love the screen name! Thanks for the props. I promised Edward that I would not let him down :) He will be back soon enough!

As for the mesh, I just used deer netting from Lowe's. You can also get bird netting which has a smaller mesh but I was worried it would interfere with the light intensity. The shading from the deer netting is imperceptible so I don't think the bird netting would be much different. I did have two small gobies make it through the mesh so you might want the bird netting.

I wonder what 300 Clarions look like?

Stopped by my local LFS to find they stocked up on Clarions.

Were there really 300 there? One guy said it was $35,000 in fish but at $2500 a pop that would only get you 14 so that doesn't make sense. 300 would be $750,000!

The last I heard, there were 280 that came in.

Erik, any updated shots of the system?

Hi Mark-

I do owe everyone some updated pics. The tank had gone through the typical cyano outbreak and had some nasty green/brown mats of algae. I have been running Bulk Reef Supply ferrous phosphate media and it seems to be doing the trick. Rock is looking pretty clean and the sandbed has only spotty patches of brown algae.

So long story short, the tank was not very photo friendly the past few months. I will try to take some photos this weekend.

:eek1: Holy Spit!!!

That's too cool man!

...I wonder if they only do that when they feel stressed, or if they do it more often like a flashlight fish.

Owners report that the fish, once fully accustomed to their surroundings don't have such dramatic flashing. Many species, however, will change colors when excited (by food, threats, etc). I am sure this is the case with these.

New 6"+ Maculiceps

New 6"+ Maculiceps

Still acclimating to its new environment. Lots of grazing but going a little slow with transitioning to prepared foods. Need to get some garlic in its system to fight off the ick.
