Wow, that must have got your heart racing!

Yeah no doubt!! One large shard hit me in the stomach and imagine my relief when I did not see a tare in my shirt! Power tools scare the hell out of me!

Haha I tried but they are not very willing to put effort into sourcing fish that don't appear on their normal list. I found another rare fish hookup now :)

Thats good to hear. One of these days you might need to share that with me :p

Erik,

Wish i knew about those places when i was in Indo. But it looks pretty similar to the place i visited in Singapore and Malaysia. The selections was awesome/prices and for most part they were using natural sun light as well.

For anyone interested in knowing more about where your corals come from:

For all the non-locals following my thread, Eddie used to own a LFS here in the Bay Area known as Tropical Paradise. He was quite passionate about the hobby and had a good eye for really nice SPS. Now he is putting those skills to work at the source!
Eddie rocks... awesome guy, great info... and I'm jealous ;)

His blog has been a daily stop of mine for as long as I can remember :D

Sorry to report that my latest update has to be the news of my prized Richmond's wrasse dying. Any help in figuring out the cause would be much appreciated. Here is the link:

damn erik...doing big things these days. that is one bad *ss setup.
good to see some ppl are still going all out and keeping the reefing madness alive.

ALEX!!! Whats up my friend?? Glad to see you are still trolling RC. Not sure how/why I have been able to stay into this money pit of a hobby so long. Still kicking tho! Can't say the same for many others...seems like you can hear the crickets chirping here lately.

Erik,
I guess he is still the SPS God ... :) He can just show up when he like to.

Speaking for all the crickets: We're still here.

Marc-

I know you are always good for a post or two or three... :)

Wow Roy...now if only Alex could get the ladies to say the same!

lol..how do u know thats not true.

ive been trolling rc to try and sell some equipment. surprisingly no one wants a blue wave 7 ballast for dirt cheap. give it up to you for keeping a monstrous reef in these times. running cost for that tank could fund payments on a nice car.

did you lose any of your prized corals in the transfer?

Yeah its not cheap running it but surprisingly it is less than my 225 because the tank regulates temp much more efficiently. A lot more surface area for evaporation. The 225 also had a big canopy on top which trapped a lot of the heat. The chiller would eat up a lot of $$. For most of the year the chiller never even turns on with the new system.

As for losing prized corals...read the thread...I lost almost all of them. Totally unnecessary tragedy! You will be happy to know that I managed to keep the Dalton...I mean Dave...I mean Tropical Paradise Tort.

Figured I am long overdue for updates and tank shots. Im glad to report everything has been doing very well (knock on wood)! Thanks to my generous friends I have loaded up on frags which have encrusted nicely and have been coloring up. I recently purchased a few very nice colonies which are doing well too. I even got a few wild table colonies which have adapted surprisingly well. My past experience with tables is that they would often RTN after a few days. I believe it is due to inadequate water flow over the coral. In the past I used to buy colonies and immediately frag them up. Often I would have one or two frags that would make it.
I have also acquired another Richmond wrasse to replace the one I lost. In addition I also added:

small Declivas butterfly
male and female Meleagris leopard wrasse
female Bipartitus Leopard wrasse (male didn't make it)
unknown tamarin wrasse speciesFowleri Tang
Pale Lipped tang (Acanthurus leucocheilus)
Maculiceps tang

I have also completed a few projects. The first being level sensor installation in the sump and skimmer collection container. Next I made some Giesemann to PFO pigtails so that I could swap out the Giesemann ballasts for PFO. Finally I swapped out my non-controllable Tunze Stream 2's for a controllable one.

Project1: Auto-shutoff for skimmer

Project1: Auto-shutoff for skimmer

Over the past few years I have had a number of times when my skimmer decided to go crazy and overflow all over my floors. A few months back it happened again and that was the last straw. Here is a recap of the mishap:

So I finally got smart and purchased a few float level sensors to hook up to my Profilux. I figure I spent a few thousand on the thing so I might as well take advantage of all the features. The nice thing about the Profilux is that it can support multiple float level sensors. I installed two different kinds of sensors in the sump to control the water level. They will shut off my topoff and trigger an alarm and notification. This is pretty standard stuff so I didn't bother shooting photos.

What I am more excited about is the auto-shutoff for the skimmer. This has been the cause of many a sleepless night for me and I am glad I found the solution! Basically I fabricated a bracket which will hold a float level sensor inside the skimmate collection container. When the skimmate level gets too high, the sensor trips and the Profilix shuts power to the skimmer preventing a major mess.

Here are some shots I took.

Skimmate collection container modified with float level sensor:

You will notice that I cut the 9' cord for the float level sensor short and spliced the male cat6 plug on the end. I purchased a cat6 (male to female) extension cable from Fry's which is what runs from the Profilux down to the container. having the ability to disconnect at the collection container makes emptying much quicker. It also prevents ware and tare on the Profilux as I am not constantly unplugging and plugging the cable into the unit.

Here is a shot showing the modified lid next to an unmodified one. As a side note it took MarineDepot 3 tries to get me a skimmate collection container undamaged. Spare parts!

A little closer....

Real close... Here you can see how I did it. I purchased an acrylic cube from Tap plastic and tapped out some threads to insert plastic screws. Got rid of the ping pong ball (which doesnt work anyway). Works pretty well!

Project2: Pigtails for Giesemann to PFO Conversion

Project2: Pigtails for Giesemann to PFO Conversion

Ever since setting up the tank I have not been impressed with the Giesemann 250w HQI ballasts. Running Reeflux 250w 12,000K bulbs, the Giesemann ballasts would fire them yellower that my PFO's. So I decided to swap them out. I also opted to upgrade the center position of the Spectra to a 400W as the rockwork in the center of the tank is lower than the left and right. The result, BTW, is perfect. The two different wattage bulbs blend well.

So first I ordered female Giesemann connectors. These are very easy to use as there are just two screws holding them together and they pop right open.

I also ordered some PFO cords from MarineDepot (not shown).

After figuring out how to convert US electrical to European:

I then did some cutting and splicing and voila!

Not much of a project I guess...well selling the 6085's turned out to be a project but thats another story for another day...

This thing SCREAMS!

I have this controlled off the Profilux. I can only have it at max 80% otherwise it creates a standing wave at the opposite end of the tank (72" away!).

Greart idea for the float level sensor for the skimmer cup. I have been wondering why more company don't offer this option ever since I seen it on one of the ATB skimmers.

The new tunzes rock on the profilux. What mode do you have yours on?
