hey guys, im not sure if i just havent looked closely enough....but i think my clowns might have ick.....i can see tiny white bubbles on them.....do you think its ick?.......would it be good idea to get a fire shrimp in my tank?....you think that would be a safe idea?

this early on I would get a cheaper shrimp first...like peppermint or coral banded...trust me I lost two early on...$30 a piece

do you have a cleaner shrimp? I just got 5 of them for my tanks. of course I got a few fish for them to clean.

do a search for ick on here and do some reading. theres alot of info about it on here and to much for just one of us to answer. cleaner shrimp isnt an easy way out of it so dont just depend on buying one and its cured. theres alot that goes into ick then just a simple cure. if only it was as easy as a cleaner shrimp lol. not to sound rude but alot of times you get more out of searching then expecting a good answer from posting a question .its always better to read alot of different sugestions then just a few. thats why reefcentral is so usefull. theres alot of good info here but theres some bad to so you cant expect to always get the right answer. we here on mtrc dont know it all :)

i dont know what happened...but they are completely gone from the clowns......however, my yellow clown goby still has them ....and looks like he's dying....ive had him for 2 weeks, and never once did i see the little guy eat....usually he just chills at the bottom....now he's just chillin at the top....and not too happy lookin either....i already have 1 peppermint shrimp in there to kill the aptasia

p.s. thanks pitbull for the link....ive search other forums for this answer already...practically all last night ....no ZzzZzZz's at all......but they are much smaller forums.....unlike reefcentral.....im never able to search here...because i always get an error

thats what i have to do to search to. I just had a bad outbreak of ick myself and learned more about it then i ever knew. my clown made it through the ick...well so far atleast but i had a royal gramma and a damsel die from it before i could do anything. It happened so fast and i was surprised my clown made it. He looked bad for a few days but he pulled through...hopefully. I never had this much trouble with it untill now in any of my nanos so i learned my lesson and im gonna quarintine for now on. good luck with it.

What exactly are you using for a quarantine tank, gsusfreak?

I'm beginning to want to plan one out. :)

well, from what ive read....i QT is just a tank to put the fish in and monitor it for 3-4 weeks......just saltwater and lights....and pvc pipes so the fish can hide....bare bottom....powerhead for flow and i heater.....if im missing something else..anyone feel free to add

p.s. right now i have some liverock in it...cus i had nowhere else to put the rock

It's fine to put rock in a qt (in fact, some people qt rock to make sure no pests hitch hiked in). The only thing is, if your fish in qt does have something, you'll want to remove the rock before you treat the fish and depending on what your fish has you probably wouldn't want to move the rock to a display tank... so you can get into a bad position that way. In a perfect world, we would all have 10 qt tanks that we could qt everything seperately in isolated systems. Obviously, most people can't do that.

QT is a good idea.

Here is a link about quarantine tanks:

Here are a couple of good ones on ich:

Good one on hyposalinity treatment:
http://www.petsforum.com/personal/trevor-jones/hyposalinity.html

For nitrates, I have a biowheel, and many people use a sponge that they keep in the sump of the main display, and then when you fire up the QT tank, you toss in the sponge/biowheel. If you do copper treatment, you'll kill the bacteria and will need to keep up by doing water changes. I use a 12 gallon tank for my QT, so it isn't too hard to keep up if I need to.

I've got mine running right now, so if you come to the meeting next Saturday you can see how I have mine set up. It's pretty simple.

gsusfreak, how are your fish doing? my clown was the only one thats made it so far. I lost a damsel and a royal gramma. I noticed on your tank thread that you have 2 clowns. did they make it so far? mine only had a few spots on it all together and the others were covered in it. Im just surprised out of all the nano's ive had ive never had a problem like this. I guess i could have had ick before in them but it just never got bad enough to notice it. lesson learned though. Im just glad it wasnt down the road when i had a full stock.

But would it be dangerous to keep a sponge/bio wheel in your main tank after having used it in a tank thats had a copper treatment applied?

pitbull...all the fish are doing good....i lost a green chromis early on, but that was due to the ick,....my clowns decided to go after him for some reason ....i had that little sucker for only 2 days, before he was shredded to pieces......i picked up the yellow clown goby to replace him since he was a bottom dweller......and for the last 2 weeks, i never saw him eat....i think thats the reason why he has the most ick right now.......but he's still alive....he doesnt look as good as the clowns though

the main reason i think i lost the gramma was because he wouldnt eat either and was just coevered in ick. I havnt seen him come out of the rock work so i take it he didnt make it.
