AI Hydra Settings Thread

I am setting up a new 90 gal 36x24x24 SPS dominant[just finishing up cycle], with two 52's and the director. It would be great to see continuous updates on Roberto's setting if he adjusts and reasons why, Roberto seems to be the only person running high settings with success. Your tank is awesome btw, thanks for sharing everyone I have learned a lot, I was running my lights with everything at 100% until I remember that I saw this thread a while back just read from about page 25 since that seems to be when the 52's and director was released. I am now running much lower percentages and I am raising lights from 8 inches to 11"

Hello guys and thanks for all the nice words about my tank. The settings remains the same .

Just a hint. I always maintain my alk levels between 8 and 8.5 and measure the PAR out every time I made an adjustment. Right now I have about 800 PAR at 10"bellow the water and approx 400 on my lowest SPS (about 50cm bellow the water).

Other important tip is that if your corals are NOT get used to be under high output LEDs and specially with UV leds, go REALLY SLOW.

Soon, more pics.

I have a single Hydra over a 40B, 14" above the water line. LPS only, everything looks great but I had a gold torch that started to decline a week after being added to the tank.

I have greatly reduced lighting & the torch looks much better. It is no longer fully extended as it was the first week and a few times during the day will show it's skeleton & random polyps will overinflate but I don't think I'm going to lose it. It is not showing any bleaching or burning on the tips so I think I caught it early enough. Nothing is touching or picking at it & I've increased flow in case that might be it.

Below are what I have lowered my settings to, please chime in with any suggestions.

Lights at 7:30 am to 4:30 pm with 1 hour ramp

CW 37
V 30
DR 15
G 15
DB 44
RY 44
UV 30

Other LPS in the tank are frogspawn, branching hammers, candy cane, button, Duncan, & a flowerpot. The acan & flowerpot were added at the same time as the torch & I'm not seeing any changes in them. All other corals look great.

Roberto, Hope you don't mind I kinda copied your setting, as you can see in my director graph. I adjusted the setting to my tank though, since your are way to high for me. Now im having great results with it I must say. Once again your tank looks as amazing as ever

Eventually I am going to try and work myself up to those levels as well. The 52's have a lot of power... I can't help but try and push these lights.

I have regular hydras not 52's, and I still cant push them to high setting w/o frying my tank

Same here, The most I am running the lights at is 65% on the blues.
go slow whats the rush? IMO it's not worth taking the chance of frying the coral's. Just my 2 cents.

Anyone jumping on the Hydra to Hydra52 upgrade?
I'd like to, but I already shelled out $800 for two Hydra's last year. Not sure the wife will be keen on another $600 to upgrade. I'm still doing favors for her for the original purchase

New to the thread.

Have Hydras for my 180 and haven't been able to get the controller to work very consistently. Is the Director easier or better than the old school controller?

No way. I'm happy to help.

Please just be gentle with the adjustments ok ? I don't want to be responsible for frying anyone's tank with my settings.

Best of luck

HI all

Words of advice please. I have just ordered the Vega to Hydra-52 for my 180. I have 3 Vegas I am converting.

I would like to ultimately get to Roberto's levels, but i understand I will need to go through an acclimation period when i upgrade. I plan to program his settings into my AWM and then reducing the intensity. What level of intensity would you recommend starting at?

can some one advice me on how high i need to hang the hydra 52 from the water line ? what is the setting for 2x2x2 ft for sps tank ?

Both should work fine, the director has a few more bells and whistles but the controller is pretty solid since it doesn't rely on an Internet connection

I have learned to focus on distance of lights to surface of rock structures, this way if my rocks are at 8 inches from surface of the water and lights are 10 inches from surface... well you can do the math and things will probably not go well for the corals. I hope that makes sense.

Maybe the controller is out of range, some times connecting and others not?

I would start at 12" then adjust from there, see if you have many dark spots. If so raise them up if not go down
