AI Hydra Settings Thread

Just to let you know that I used to deploy over 30 AI hydra, hydra26/52/HD on about 2000 gallons of frag tanks for years. Now I go back to t5 but that is another story. I did have great success with AI hydra, the reason for switch is that AI no longer support older led and no longer offer upgrade path for my fleet of AI.

In the tide pool, water is not standing still like a mirror, please take a par meter and go to a beach and you will see what I mean.

Another point I want to bring up is that if you use a wave maker, due to the surface movement, AI hydra led pucks (like the sun, a point source light) can make the PAR values go up and down (just like the graph shown), without actually program the led to do it.

Yes true but part of the reason behind the respiration peaks is to give corals a reprieve from the highest intensity light in the schedule I have measured these spikes to be well in excess of 900 PAR under a light as powerful as the hydra. At the low points these lens peaks drop down to 5-600 PAR over a 10+ minute period.

Was the measurement done under Hydra 26 in the 50 gallon tank? How high is the light mounted? Thanks

No troll here, just someone who has enjoyed this hobby since 1978. Always looking for good ideas to improve my system. Have you tried the program with your sorely out of date lights?

Another point I want to put on the table for discussion is that most coral in the trade, especially SPS are not collected in tide pools. They are at much deeper water, which light is more even and diffused.

I understand this my premise overall has been there are clouds on the reef which reduce the intensity of the light hitting corals. The corals in turn use this break to export formed ATP and gear up for the next wave of high intensity light. This topic has been explored ad nauseum in plants. Those land based studies are why I call the peaks "respiration peaks". If plants utilize these periods of reprieve to repair and remove the by products of photosynthesis why wouldn't zooxanthelli and their host corals do the same?

Hat off to old reefers, do you know AI hydra, hydra 26/52/HD can be programmed the same way?
If you are looking for ways to improve your reef, look at improving your water quality.

This thread has nothing to do with water quality ( but nice try at deflecting the conversation) my reef is just fine thanks, partly due to the light program!

Idk about that, most corals I have witnessed being hacked from the ocean are done so in close to land at low tide or by boat in no more the 20' of water

Lighting is the final frontier. These programs are not for those who haven't figured out reef tank chemistry and the importance of water quality. They will see no benefit or harm due to the program itself. Like programmed flow patterns, light can take an excellent reef system and turn it into a show tank. It will not take a dumpy tank and turn it into a TOTM.

Once upon a time, I was on a Fiji surf trip & was invited by the Fijian boat driver to have lunch on the reef. He proceeded to scoop up large tridacnid clams from about six inches of water & scarf them down! Just sayin that corals & other inverts live very close to the surface.

That they do! I have been in northern Australia where anemones, acropora, euphyllia, chalices, zoa, etc. are completely exposed during low tide with only their slime coat to protect them. I now take my time with water changes and have even removed all water leaving all of my animals exposed for well over an hr as I fixed a leak. Everything was just fine

Thanks, they are closed up due to feeding. I have a friend who is a big fisherman, he brings me large sacks of yellowtail roe! Best food I've found!
