AI Hydra

I'm hoping it becomes more than a rumor. What do you currently have in your tank and how do you like the one hydra so far?

so do I even though i am looking at the ReefAngel. I currently have a birdsnest frag with purple tips, red candy cap monitpora, about 15 heads of bright green trumpet corals, two heads of torch corals, and a few other sps's i can't ID, all have shown incredible growth in polyp covering over some bald spots when i received them and the monti has already encrusted onto it's rock in only a month. very pleased with the Hydra's

Oh wow, that's awesome! I don't have my tank yet, it's a custom rimless. I should have it in about 8 weeks. I've been doing a lot of research on led lighting and the hydras just seem to be the best bang for buck. My tank is going to be 40 x 24 x 19 and I'm getting two fixtures. That should be enough for my tank size.

Just wondering, what is the preffered mounting fo this setup. The ceiling hanging kit or the ext thing, still dont understand this hanging yet.

If you have space behind the tank you can use the rails, I didn't and couldn't move my 180 so it was ceiling hanging kit for me.

I think I've seen pics with it mounted to wall or stand. I watched a video on AIs website and the mount looked like it kinda had a lot of up and down movement, causing it to droop a little. Like instead of a 90 degree angle, it was like an 86 degree angle.

Seemed a little bit flimsy. I think im just going to get the ceiling hanging kit. Looks very easy to use and is bery adjustable, at peast that what it seemed like from the ai hanging video. Anyone got full tank shot pictures with their hydras lighting?

Here's a crappy fts of when i first hung them, the rails on the left and right are where the other two lights will slide onto.

Just set up my new Hydra last week with a mount made of 80/20 aluminum. It's mounted to the wall and rock solid. The nice part of using 80/20 is that you can customize the build to whatever suits you.

Did you make this mount yourself? If so, how did you do it? Yours is wall mounted, could something like this be tank mounted? Also, any pics as to what you used to mount it with?

I did make it myself. You basically design what you want the unit to look like and order a rail and connectors. You'll then have to cut the rail to the correct lengths for your design, this can be done easily with a miter saw. Everything is attached together with special connectors and an Allen wrench.

Installation:
The 80/20 pieces have slots down the sides in which can fit a panhead screw(see attached). All I did was find a stud in the wall and screw two screws into the wall about 4" apart(you'll want to leave about 1/8 inch sticking out of the wall) and slid the mount down on top of them. I believe I used a #12 screw so the head was big enough to hold. The screw at the top should be approximately where you want the piece that extends over the tank to go.

If you wanted to tank mount the unit I'm sure you could; you would either have to build a hang on bracket or have something sturdy to screw into. 80/20 makes a lot of pieces and connectors that fit together so it's really up to your ingenuity.

i'm liking that product, might have to grab some and see what i can make. Reefing is a perfect example of having room behind the tank so he was able to go with the tank mount version, my 180 was not movable so i would either have had to mount it to the wall behind the stand or ceiling. I didn't drill the holes the way AI shows it for the butterfly nut, I just used a 2 1/2" coarse thread Kreg screw i used to put my stand together and went straight into the beam in the ceiling. much easier.

Reefing, what series did you use, 10 or 15? Sorry about all the questions. Just trying to get an idea of what I want to use. Thanks
