Do I really need to connect the airline to the maxijet?

Or do I just need the stream to break the surface of the water?

For gas exchange? If that's the case, all you need is something to create turbulence at the surface. I prefer NOT to create little bubles in my system (except for in the skimmer). Corals don't particularly like bubbles, and they create a ton of salt creep.
