Alan's 300g Marineland DD Reef

I just ordered my 300g Marineland Deep Dimension tank w/ Starphire front!
Should be here in about 2 weeks. :celeb2:

This is an upgrade from my 180g display. I was actually rebuilding the 180g, so figured now would be the time to upgrade :) That tank build is here:
http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1772859

Here is the plan so far:
- 300g Marineland Deep Dimension
- In-wall w/ front pane flush with the wall (same as my current 180g)
- Reeflo Dart return pump
- HK8 powerheads
- Icecap 9x60" T5s (I have 6x60" now and already have an extra Icecap 660)
- 300g Rubbermaid stock tank
- Stock tank will have a dedicated chaeto area, a frag rack, and a sohal tang (already in place now). Barebottom in here
- Shallow sand bed in display (1-2" Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand)
- Mostly large Pukani dry rock from BRS
- Have been considering a Carlson surge device

Skimmer: ?
I am looking at the Super Reef Octopus 5000 External Protein Skimmer. Recommended by Mojo

Aquascape: ?
Still not sure what I want to go with here. I've been looking at some other build threads for ideas.

Livestock
- Tangs, a few wrasses, green chromis, a few gobies, maybe a single anthias, and more
- SPS dominated, zoas/palys toward the bottom, some acans and trachs, a few clams. Possibly a few rics and a green leather

Here is the 300g stock tank. The Marineland will go in the same place as the 180g, but will come back another foot:

I like the light setup over your stock tank. I am interested in this build I was thinking of getting one of these tanks myself.

It's hard to beat the Rubbermaid stock tanks if you have the room. They are cheap, especially the 50g and 100g models, and easy to drill without having to worry about breaking them. The 300g one works out nicely and allows me room to consolidate a few things for efficiency and provide enough space for the tang. The light I have on there is an Icecap 250w Lumenarc w/ Radium lamp. It's pretty high above the water, but I only have a handful of frags in there now. I will put it closer to the water in the next week and may go with a light mover to cover the frag area.

Very nice Alan!...can't wait to see this in person. What have you been running for a skimmer on your 180?

That is one bad-a$$ looking skimmer Alan!...I bet you can't get that plumbed in soon enough...lol...nothing like a new reef toy ;)

My wife and I are looking at the same tank, if we go any bigger we would have to have it custom built.

No matter what you cant go wrong with this tank. I have seen the 200 Gallons set up and they rock!

No doubt. I had to unbox it and take a few pics over lunch :)

I wouldn't be upgrading now if I had to go with a custom tank. I like the idea (and price) of having a "factory tank" ready to go with Starphire options. The dimensions worked well for replacing my existing tank. I say go for it!

I've never seen the Marineland DDs or Starphire glass in person. I have to admit I'm pretty stoked :spin1:

Wow I am surprised you were able to resist the temptation to take the rest of the day off. That thing looks sweet.

Got everything put together tonight:

This is my first external skimmer, but I think I just need to T it off the overflow drain w/ a ball valve to control the flow going to it. It only came with a parts diagram. No instructions for water levels or gph recommendations, so I need to do a little more research on it. I might run it in-sump until I get the display tied in too

Holy crap alan, that is going to be a sick setup!!! I think it would be cool to see it half protruding through the wall so you can have some side view too. No matter what still gonna be an awesome tank!

Yep, I'm hoping the tank will be in sometime next week. I'm almost done tearing down the 180 and should be about ready to get it out of there to built the stand for the 300.

I wanted to bring it out from the wall and make 30" of the sides visible (hide the overflow chambers in the wall), but that created some issues. I would have had to mess with the new carpet and do a bunch of drywall/trim work though. I've considered building an actual stand/canopy and then having the plumbing go through the wall too. Those are probably long shots, so it will likely end up as it is now with just the front being flush w/ the wall.

Maybe then your fish room will FINALLY be crowded :)

I had a chance to move some more corals over to the stock tank tonight. I am running out of room and still have a bunch of zoas, some LPS, and a few SPS frags from the display. I have a 100g stock tank that I just tied into the 300g. I was originally planning on just using the 100g for fish, but looks like I'll need to store a few corals there as well. Also had a chance to take a few videos:
