Looks like algae on the glass. You should clean it off. If you just set up the tank it isn't coralline algae.

Also, it tends to be a natural reaction in a newly setup system. Cyano (which I think is what you have) is not an algae but a bacteria and it reproduces in the system very quickly and is a quite efficient consumer of nutrients. I would let it be. With long term effective management of your water quality this will not 'take over' your tank.

Coralline algae comes in many colors, I currently have green, pink, purple, and red in my tank. If its coralline, it will be hard to scrape off the glass. If its hair algae, your snails and cleanup crew will be taking chunks out of it and it will be fairly easy to clean it off the glass. If its cyano, you would be able to wipe it away with a finger.

since the tank is new i would think that its cyano, which should wipe off pretty easy. if you need to seriously scrape...it's coraline

I always clean anything off my glass. As for water changes to say you need more we would need to know how much you do now. New tanks just go through some of this stuff so not sure water changes will help that. I do 20% a week some do 10. My system is only 100G total so 20G is pretty easy to do. Can't imagine the effort on a 500G system. Good luck and do freak out yet. It doesn't look that bad for a new tank.
