Algae ID

This algae likes to grow on dead or dying coral. I have a suspicion that it may be the cause of the death.

Actually that is some small pieces of the dying edge of Montipora. On the last picture you can see on the left bottom and the top center some some strange blue and red thread like structures that are in the coral skeleton when they get crushed.

Looks like a red turf algae. I have something similar growing a a rock that has blue sympodium on it. I have to prune it out weekly. So far it hasn't spread nor has it diminshed.

Post up a macro shot of it in the tank i'm curious to see how you guys are dealing with the scourge of humanity, red brush/gelidium/rhodophyta etc

If you hit the "quote" button on his post, it'll show you the link. I can get to the page from my machine.

If it is red turf, and its growing on rocks, I got rid of mine a year ago buy buying a stainless steel welders brush. (brass wont work for obvious reasons). Tooth brush wouldn't cut the algae.

Took the 2 rocks out that had it and went to town. Had to do it 3 times as small patches I missed grew back. Fixed the issue.

Now adays I hear that the peroxide treatment works just as well.

Perhaps more information than you want, but a starting point to understand the problems regarding ID, toxins produced, types of algae.............etc:

Unfortunately, not much available as far as control measures from scientific research. :(

Nice pics. :)
Everything indicated above by HighlandReefer, plus, if it is red turf algae, I had it and a few Mexican Turbo snails got rid of it for me rather quickly. I have a 90 gal. and I placed 4 turbos in the tank. Good luck.
