Algae Scrubber Basics

Thank you for testing potassium! I have used GFO to correct an imbalance in my tank. Search my posts and you should be able to find my info from my tests.

I have read many posts that say ATS dosent help in reducing phosphates, but still helps in geting rid of the algae from DT..

Algae scrubbers most certainly DO remove phosphate. Anyone telling you anything else either knows nothing on the topic, is lying or has an agenda to spread false information about scrubbers and their effectiveness.

Algae "requires" phosphate... no question on that.

the biggest algae issue in my tank is green turf algae (very hard and not being able to remove pulling it)and some kinda red macro type algae... HA has almost gone from DT... hope it helps me get rid of it........

Here is the algae i have:

Here is my completed revolving algae scrubber prototype. If it works well I will design a bigger, better, good looking one.

With this picture I wonder if there is enough light. It would seem to me that this design could handle even more light then other successful water fall type scrubbers. Also it seems most have gone to red leds.

There are only 18 LEDs on this prototype but it is bright. I took the picture with a flash so it doesn't look bright in the picture.
I never tried reds but I was thinking of adding reds on part of my algae trough just as an experiment.

That's pretty amazing. I like the design. Just wondering about a cpl things.
Do you see salt creep as an issue ?

Is your design based on tank size or feed amount?

I was just reading Algae scrubber basics and that post suggests a much smaller collection sheet than I was going to use.

Experimenting is the best way to clear a path for everyone.

How is the cloth attached?
On this small prototype it is glued on with GOOP glue but in advanced models it will be sewn on.
There is no salt creep "yet" as I just installed it yesterday, I will find out soon. It has "O" rings on the upper shaft to direct any water off the roller and not on the ends.
It is based on the material I have at hand.
Newer prototypes will be larger.
Remember this is just a test, the tank also has a 5' trough that is designed to grow algae.

I do like your rotating scrubber. I just had an idea...prolly not that practical but like the kitty litter box that self cleans. Could there be an arm of sorts that with a manual lever that scrapes the algae off the pads...? If designed to scrape is an upward action, that is to say, against the material as it rotates down, the scraped algae could be captured in an exterior bin. I'm sure the drive motor would have to be a lot more powerful and would have to be stepped down in RPM but up in torque.

Next I'll work on ridiculous recipes for algae LOL. Say....I hope this isn't considered off thread but could this algae be ground, blended, dried and fed to tank critters ?
