Algae Scrubber Basics

5 days growth on new lights...on 3 hrs off 2 hrs. I would say its working :). No question...algae likes the white/yellow light just fine.....

Just pulled 1cup of algae from my scrubber from 17 days. Mostly dark green but one purplish patch from the screen. It was weird, the algae peeled off the screen for the most part like a sheet of paper?
And ideas on why

IIRC you're running the LEDs about 9 hours/day? You don't really want to go much more than 14 days for the growth period, so going 17 could mean more detachment.

With that growth now, you can probably increase the photoperiod a bit. Remind me, what are you N & P readings, tank conditions, etc? Seems like it's time to start pushing it more now that you definitely have a mature screen. It might even be time to increase the intensity but let's not go there quite yet

Nice, so are you cycling the light though the whole day on that schedule? Or just on the off hours of you DT lights?

BTW, I had these running for about 4 days, and the growth has EXPLODED. I had algae hang all the way from the spray bar down 2 inches into the drain below the screen (about 10" or so). Overall I am very impressed with these lights. The center of the screen is kinda yellow, ( I was running it 24hrs ) so i just switched the photo period to 3 hours on 2 hours off. We will see how that goes for a week or so.

But for ~$20, these new lights are fantastic :)

Horace,

If I may ask, where did you purchase these lights?

Thanks!

Hearing about LED grow lights for the first time? Well, these are the specific led lights that can help grow plants. NASA developed this technology, and the primary motive of these lights was to grow plants on other planets than earth but since a few years these lights are available to the normal people and you can buy online easily.

The algae will utilise the red spectrum of light in particular & the other spectrums that makes up the white will be a waste of Watts.

Your 50W light, on each side of that screen, could instead be about 16W of red 660 nm leds

Not really. I ran red LED on one side and blue on the other... growth was almost the same. I don't really know where the color discrimination came from but flow and surface condition had a much greater effect on growth. Try it.

False.

I had 2x50w red grow lights before and the algae didnt grow at even half the speed. Try it yourself.
