All My Zoas Not Opening!---HELP!

Tap Water Only Club
When my lights turned on today none of my zoas in my frag tank were open. I waited 30 mins and still no luck, usually all of them are open within 10 mins. I have a bunch of rics, lps, clams and a couple of fish which all look ok. It is all of my zoas (over 50 plugs) which aren’t opening.

I just did a 50% water change hoping this would help. I am going to go to the lfs and get my water checked, since I have no test kits.

I have noticed that there has been a lot of slimy, stringy, dark green algae type growth on my egg crate and some of the plugs. Im sure my nutrients are pretty high, since I haven’t done a water change in over a month and I have no skimmer. I also had a pair of clowns in there which I just sold.

Any help would be appreciated. Im confused why it is only affecting my zoas.

Thanks

got any pics of this stringy algae you mention??

I would run some carbon in a upflow canister filter of some kind. That is alwasy the first thing to do if any contaminants may be of concern.

Ill probably do anorher 25% wc tomorrow, some of the zoas have opened maybe 10%.

Here are some pics:

looks a lot like Dinoflaggetes (sp?). I had some that totally smothered a colony. As 650 said use a turkey baster to blow off the algea covering them. Mine took a couple days after clearing them to open again

This stuff just boomed in the last couple of days. I do use powerheads to blow it off. I thought is was cyno but it was actually sponge. I have noticed a lot of purple and brown/cream colored sponge growing in between/on top of the zoas. it seems to be choaking some of the zoas. is this a sigh of an unhealthy frag tank? any idea why so much sponge growth?

I don't think cyno is the cause for the zoas not opening. only a few frags actually have it on there which I blow off every few days.

and ALL the zoas didn't open up, they were all ok on sunday.

Get yourself a skimmer man! Especially since you're not doing enough WC. I was just gonna ask you about more Auroras too--mine just blew off their plug.
