Thanks Scott I do appreciate your thoughts and am just looking for info. As someone on this board said it is good to learn from your own mistakes...better to learn from others! That really is all i'm trying to do
I just got a call from a lady in kohler, WI (near Green Bay) I had her give me a call if they ever got Southdown again. She said that they will permantly be carrying the stuff from now on....the cost was something like 6.97/bag....To bad I don't need any. I already bought a pallet!!
I live a mile from Kohler, WI LOL. Odd you mentioned it! I live in Sheboygan Falls, WI.
Anyways, our local Home Depot is selling the recommended Southdown sand at $6.97 for a 50lb bag. Four full skids in the viewing racks, and I'd safely wager many more tucked away out of view.
First it was $2.99 a bag. I got mine last month for $4.99. Now it's $6.97. Wow, I think it's supply and demand, the reefers are really driving up the price !!
Its ok to use most any sand. Just the grain size is a good match for a DSB with sd and similar products. The fact it calcium based is a nice feature too. If you want to know if its calcium based take a bit of vinegar in a eye drop bottle or some other convienent holder to the store. get a small sample of the sand, there is normally some laying on the bags and pallet. Put the sample in your hand, put a few drops of vinegar on it. If it fizzes it is calcium based.
Hi;
I'm planning a road trip soon. If anyone knows of Southdown in the above mentioned states, please let me know. I'm willing to do a little extra driving to get some.
Thanks;
Bob
I'm getting my Aunt to pick up some from the Kohler, WI store (I have family that's not too far from there, I live in the NW suburbs of Chicago)... I'm preping for a 125 gallon aquarium that I'll be setting up this coming winter...
For anyone in the Kohler, WI area, I was informed that they have "several pallets" on hand.
I'm going to check, there are 3 other Home Depots near me, I picked up last 4 bags at one. Kinda hard to explain to the wife when I am still 3-6 months from setting up the tank!!
Is there only one Southdown? I talked to my Aunt today (she picked up 6 bags for me), and she said that the bags are clear with the blue and red on them... but that it says "Not for use in Tropical Aquariums" or something to that effect. I'm a little worried now that I have six bags of sand that will be unusable (for the aquarium). Anyone have thoughts on this?
If you haven't read through the SD posts yet you should...It will give you many tips/best practices regarding SD including information on the "not intended for aquarium use".
HD had what remains of 4 pallets - about 2 pallets left in case anyone wants to try to get them transferred or PU some. I'm getting about 10 bags myself & hiding them from the wife
OK, just jumped through some impossible hoops and scored some Yardright Tropical Play Sand here in remote and deprived Central VA.
Based on what I know about how this stuff is processed (intense heat), I plan to transfer it from bag to display tank - no washing, no other handling. Right? Can anyone cite direct experience where direct introductoin to an existing tank has led to trouble?
Second question: I understand the marketing issue behind the admonition against aquarium use printed on the bag and have read endless threads. But am curious what the aquarium supply houses charge for this same stuff. Have gone to a couple of web sites and haven't been able to identify the product...
OK, here's a question for all of you who've been following this thread. We're gung-ho for Southdown, right? Many of us have or will replace CC with sand. So what do you all make of the threads that are the opposite - people abandoning their DSBs for shallow beds of sand, or for something else all together?
I put in sand at the urging of others here, thinking it was the "best" way to do it, and now I'm reading threads that talk about how bad DSBs are in aquariums, that they will crash, etc. I can't make heads or tails of it all.
