for the person looking for some around York, PA, you can get it at any Home Depot in Northern Delaware. If they have it there, I am sure you can get it in Southern PA.

Sorry to be so ignorant, but what can one use southdown for?
To fill your kids sand boxes, make sand castles. We use it in the hobby as a cheap alternative to those expensive $20 plus bags of LFS sand. Its The perfect size for a DSB.

i know this is off topic but could i collect local beach sand
(so. cal area) for my sand bed? i just pickd
up a 100 gallon..Thanks Greg

It's amazing to think that with over 36,000 views for this thread, that means that almost every person on RC could have read it at least once.....WOW.

I just came from my local HD and bought 4 bags of this sand. (The bags with the boy in overalls). Anyway....I don't even have a tank yet!

So let me get this straight since this is the newbie forum....

This Southdown sand is perfect for a reef tank to do a deep sand bed (DSB). I pile it in at about 3.5 to 4 inches deep to give my sand-sifters something to go through but also to create a oxygen depleted layer (anaerobic???) that is useful for certain bacteria to live that get rid of the nitrates in my tank. <-----is this the whole idea??? Kinda like in the deepest part of live rock???

Also........I know that I have to add some form of existing live sand to "jumpstart" this process but do I ever have to replace my sand in 5 years or so? I remember reading this and I wonder if it is true and why???

Nope. You want the smaller particles as well. Don't worry, the dust cloud will clear on it's own.

I guess if I order the "package" from TBS then it comes with all the sand I need.
No, you wont need to get sand as the TBS packege will bring excellent LS.

You need to try to collect the sand from far out of shore. In shore sand might be contaminated or contain nasties of some kinda.

Hate to revive this thread, but the phone numbers have changed and was hoping someone would know the new numbers?

Keep in mind that the name has apparently changed, to Old Castle play sand. And make sure you inquire for it in the garden dept. of HD (not concrete supply).

so it does not say southdown on it anymore? im gunna hit up my home depo tonight and see what i can find. ive found a guy who sells it from a lfs but if i can find it cheaper i will :D

If you scroll up a bit, you will see that Grumpy Vet has posted both Southdown and Yardright bags.

anyone know where i can get this sand in vancouver area, canada? any other hardware store that carry the SD??? thx

FWIW, SD is still available in the traditional bag with the boy in overalls at several HD in Southeastern Pa. Yes, it still passes the vinegar test. No, it has not been replaced by Yardright, at least not at my HD.
