What is the sku number for the southdown sand.
They only have southdown playsand and all purpose sand.
Which one is it?
50lbs for $2.40
SKU 137263
Is this it?

I just picked up 2 bags of southdown at NJ HD.
The southdown was 5.99/bag.

On the bag its says NOT TO BE USED FOR AQUARIUM.

Did i get the right one, is there another type?

If it has the boy wearing overalls, you got the right one. That is just a legal thing. I also thought the same, but I guess that they say that so we will go to the LFS and get the expensive stuff.

The bag does have a picture of a boy with overalls.
Also has a picture of a rectangular stand box with a shovel and bucket.
This is live sand?
Is marine substrate also consider live sand?

Yes this is SD sand. No its not live. Buying LS is sand that is took from the ocean floor. It is called live because of the organisims and benificial bacteria that are in it. This does not mean that you are going to have "dead" sand becasue you bought SD. Find a fellow reefer who can give you a cup of there established sand to seed yours. Other option buy a bag of LS and seed it that way. Or do what I did and not buy any. If you have plenty of LR that will be sufficiant to seed it as well. Note: It is not important to have LS if you are not using a DSB. DSB's need to be "live" as the function of a DSB requires the micro organisims for it to work

OK, I just want to know that this sand has worked for people with reefs.
All, please reply if you used SD sand and it didnt work.

So sand can work like live rocks?
As the tank cycles and matures it will eventually become live from either live rock or seeding?
I am not going to seed my sand as I will have more than 1lb per 1g in my tank.

Thank you all.

Anybody got a sump for a 150? PM me ;)

Alot depends on the rock. If what lives in the sand happens to be on the rock and not dead yet, then you might be in good shape, but I wouldn't bother. Just get a friend to scrape off a nice big cup of sand from the top 1" of their tank, and put it on top of yours. I'm using 5" of SD sand and the last 1"..I got lucky and scraped it off the top of a 1yo tank that was being broken down, so I got ALOT of LS. Although almost all of it was SD sand seeded from somebody else. The tanks been up for about 6 months and is looking great, although the only corals I've put in are frags. You can see alot of worm tracks against the glass from where inhabitants have taken refug in my SD sand.

Looking for southdown near Nashville, TN

I am looking to buy southdown near Nashville, TN.
If you can help, please let me know. I am going to be moving from a 120 to a 180 soon and would like to start off the new tank with SD. Any hdlp would be appreciated.
thanks,

Tom

Your best bet would be to go to HD site and look up the phone numbers for stores in the area and call to see if they carry it. Thats what I did. I called about 8 stores in the Chicago area and finally found a store that had it:)

I like the idea of using SouthDown sand and adding a small amount of live sand to seed it. I live in North Carolina, and if I am uable to find SouthDown, what other alternatives do I have that would give me a sandy bottom look? Sometimes argonite looks like small rocky gravel, and I don't want to pay for all live sand.

Keep in mind that the name has apparently changed, to Old Castle play sand. And make sure you inquire for it in the garden dept. of HD (not concrete supply).

I just bought it last week, and it is blue and red with the boy on the front cover in coveralls.

The front states, "Tropical play sand" real large, and on the bottom it states, "from the Caribean" and "not for tropical use". Just pulled the bag out of my laundry trash can to look at it.

Michiganders- in the southeast, Fenton Home Depot is about half a pallet left of 50# Southdown @ 6.99 each. It's outside in the garden section sort of off by itself.

This is as of Saturday Jan 3rd, 2004. Happy New Year..

Old Castle in Maryland

Old Castle in Maryland

Just a note, I just got some from the Home Depot in Annapolis Maryland...they had TWO whole fresh pallets. I had to get them get the forklift to take it down in Gardening, all they had at floor level was the Silica Play Sand in the solid blue bags from Delaware. They sorta looked at me like I was insane that I needed the Carribean Sand. $5 a bag.

It's definately the real deal, it's the Blue and Red bag with the little boy, and it's white and non-Silica.

Thanks JohnK, I was wanting to know where I could get some in that area. I am moving shortly to York, Pa and Annapolis is not all that far from there. :)

I suspect you can find some at Home Depots in the Baltimore Suburbs, if Annapolis has some, for a much shorter drive.

Annapolis is more out of the way from the DC/Baltimore suburbs and if there is a shortage it's been less likely to be picked clean by reefers.

Anyway, they left the pallet they took down at ground level, I think, and there's plenty left.
