Bad news for local Detroit reefers.. In regards to my previous post that the Canton store was ordering some more Southdown/Oldcastle,..., no go... They said they had problems ordering it. No more details available. Bottom line, we are Southdownless in Detroit.

So when getting southdown how do i prep it before putting it in the tank? should i rinse it or just put it right in the water?

I put it right in the tank, put plastic over it, and a bowl, pour water into bowl until water level raises. Plastic floats, keep pouring water in. Keeps dust storm down

If you have the water in just pour the sand in. It will settle in a few days. Then till the top silt into the sand so its incorporated into the sand again.
Then you can add you live rock an about a 1/2 to 1/4 " of live sand. This should cycle the tank in a few days just add a fish once it tests ok and off you go

What if I already have the water in??
Get A piece of PVC pipe long enough to reach the tank floor and to come out of the water. Fill the tube with sand and scatter the tank bottom slowly. Like this you will have minimal storm.

Casino's way works but it is definitly a two person job. And use the biggest size tube you can, six inches is nice. I tried it myself but I was doing it alone and gave up.

Well just got off the phone with my local HD and talked to a lady who is willing to help me get some oldcastle over here on the west coast. I'll post here and also start a new thread for the socal people when I get it or more information on how to get it. I told her I would like to try and get 10 pallets out here as there are a lot of people out here trying to find some. Wish me luck.

What I mean for preping it was...

I was told you have to rinse out the sand before putting it in the tank.? thoughts? or just put it in?

do i need to wash the sand? sounds weird.

southdown in Eastern Washington

southdown in Eastern Washington

South Down in Eastern Washington (State). I had a shipment of South Down, sent here, but I had to get more than I needed. I can't pick up just mine, I have to buy all of it. I wanted to know if anyone out there needs some, and if so PM me. I need to find out in the next couple of days or they are going to send it back.

My son just picked up 7 bags of Southdown at the Home Depot located in Lake Zurich, IL. This is about 25 miles Norhwest of Chicago. He paid $6.99 per bag and said there were 10 bags left on the pallet. Don't know if they had more in the back. Good Luck!

How to get it to the local store?

How to get it to the local store?

Hi all:

Why does the bag of sand actually say not intended for aquariums? legal waiver?

GS: I live on the other side of the mountains, otherwise I would drive over if I lived closer.

How do you request it be delivered to the local store? If this has been covered, I apologize.

Thanks!
Brad

I think the general price is $6.99/50lb bag, thats how much I payed anyway. Actually I didnt even pay that. The cashier scanned the wrong sand out of the book then when she couldnt fing the SD barcode she just let me have it for 2.99 a bag. :D
