All you EVER wanted to know about Southdown

Mike, did you try the HD on Mountain Rd. at Ritchie Hwy? That's where I got mine this past winter. They may have more now.

I have tried there this year, and they have this sand there that on the Rack says Tropical play sand, but does not say that on the bag. When I bought a bag and tested it, it had no reaction.

They must not have changed the label. I got bags with the kid in overalls when I went. Supposedly, Exotic Aquatics has Southdown. You might want to give them a call and see. You'll probably pay more, but it's still probably going to be less expensive than Carrib-Sea or something else.

Hey Guys

I've been looking all over the DC area for South Down. The HD's here have switched over to Quickcrete sand. I also tested this and it failed the vinegar test.

I finally found some Yard Right Tropical at Southern States in Manassas Va.

Chris

Anyone know if I can get some up in Providence, RI ? I'm going to be at a professional conference there the middle of August. I'm running my tank BB for now and hoping I'll be able to pick up some Southdown, Yard Right, whatever it's called ... We surely can't get it here in NM.

Yeah you can get Southdown in the Providence area.. . Home Depot has it. Got mine in Seekonk Mass.. next town over from RI.. but i'm sure it's all about the area... if not, i have 500 lbs in my basement ,.. hehee

Right now I'm running my tank BB, waiting for the chance to get some Southdown. Think the airline security will wonder what's up if they look in my luggage to find a 50lb bag of sand?

Just stopped by the local HD here in Rochester NY and they had 3 pallets of SD. Yes, with the southdown name on it. Now, for a question, and if there is a thread please point me there because southdown creates WAY too many threads to read. I have a 55 with CC, 60lbs LR, 4 fish, and some leathers that is doing good. I bought 3 bags of SD to replace the CC. What exactly it the best process to replace the CC with the SD? I will scoop out the CC and re-arrange the rocks but I am most concerned with introducing the SD to an established tank. I understand you don't want to rinse it (which goes AGAINST everything I have been taught!) and I was thinking about using a piece of 4 inch pvc to funnel it to the bottom, but what am I in for? What am I getting myself into and could I do anything differently? Thanks, and reef central has been a godsend to me. Seems like every LFS has a different opinion on what this fish will behave like with that one, or what filter to use and whatnot. Like I said, thanks for all the dedication and knowledge you guys/girls add to this forum.

If I were you donkey, I'd do the funnel thing like you're thinking, but leave the CC in the tank. For one, it'll give a more realistic look to the SD instead of having a tank that looks like a sandbox (I added two bags of CC to 150lbs of SD in my 75), but more importantly, the already established CC will "seed" the SD with beneficial bacteria thereby making your sandstorm much shorter and also helping to make DSB properties you're trying to create happen much faster. You also might think about tuning your skimmer for somewhat wetter foam. This will also help pull some of the silt out of the water column. Of course, turn your pumps off when you're adding the SD so as much settles as possible. You'll be blowing off the LR with a baster for a while too.

Skimmer? What is that? J/K No I really don't run a skimmer. 55, bunch o live rock, and a 30g refugium with live sand. No issues in over a year. I just don't like the CC look.

I just signed up for the message board and have got a question for anyone who could help. This may bring up some info also that could help alot of others also.
OK I have read all the info on Southdown and called HD. They tracked me some down with the SKU#578-819. The only problem is that the name is not Southdown! The name that matches up for this SKU is called "Old Castle Tropical Playsand". The price I was quoted was $6.88 per 50lb bag. If anyone has any info on this "Old Castle" compared Southdown I would greatly appreciate it!!

Ok I know what everybody is thinking...... "another newbie asking a dumb question"! lol I searched the message board and was able to find the answer to my question. A big thanks to all the members on this board for posting all this info!!! Now on to find some info on dry rock.....

York, PA also has Tropical/SD outside in the garden section. The girl at the checkout asked me if I was building some record-setting sandbox. I musta had more bags than the normal schmo on my cart..hehehe.

Kenton,

Did you pick it up this weekend? I was there last weekend and they had 6 good bags, and 2 with big rips in them. So, I took the 6, and boy did that load down my card. :) hehe

Mike, I was there about 3 weeks ago, and there were a few ripped ones then. Plus about a total of 12-15 still on the skid when I left.

Wow...I have just spent about 2 hours browsing this thread...Grumpy is the MAN!!! Anyway, can I get Tropical Play Sand in South Florida or not???? Also, does Lowes have any Sand for the aquarium??? I know I read a post on this site that mentioned the Lowe's had it....Just want to confirm....

Thanks

Those lucky reefers who were able to get Southdown from their local HD, could you provide me with the store phone #s because I called Miami and one in GA and they don't carry this sand anymore.
