All you EVER wanted to know about Southdown

Has anyone seen southdown in the DC area lately? I'm willing to travel up to an hour or so away. I've been to 3 HD's over the last week or so and haven't had any luck. Calling seems like a big joke where I get answers ranging from 'never heard of it' to 'we have every kind of playsand' only to get there and they don't have it.

SouthDown @ HD in Glasgow, DE

SouthDown @ HD in Glasgow, DE

After searching a few Maryland HDs with no luck I foud a couple bags of southdown in Glasgow, DE. They had 5-6 bags on "open bag pallets" for 11$ - unfortunately they were sold, I wonder if the buyers had any idea what they had! Any way the manager said they were getting another shipment this week.

This is there new number. Talked to them on the phone a bit ago and they do not carry the sand. They do have a customer that gets it but not them. Will have to resort to other means to aquire the sand here in jacksonville. Any other suggestions?

Hey Guys

I've been looking all over the DC area for South Down. The HD's here have switched over to Quickcrete sand. I also tested this and it failed the vinegar test.

I finally found some Yard Right Tropical at Southern States in Manassas Va.

ctreptow - if you're still monitoring this thread could you be a little more specific? I haven't had any luck finding this in the dc area.

Thanks for the offer, but I need this like tomorrow and my time is running short. I may drive up there as it's only a 3 hour drive...

Hey cyberkiller...nice to see someone from my neck of the woods!! I just was at Home Depot in York today to get some SD for my new tank tank that I am setting up. Something interesting about this batch of SD is I found many hard clumps, with my old tank there was none, also I think it was more fine too, this batch was a little more course. Eh oh well!!

Where are you from in York. I just moved to Hallam 2 weeks ago.

I just moved back to town from living in Illinois for 6 years...which sucked!! Any case, going up to lancaster tomorrow to check out "that fish place" I hear it is kick a$! I am going to leave the check card and credit cards at home though, well thats what I told the wife anyway:D :D

hallo,
just wanted to let everyone in the minneapolis minnesota area know that the brooklyn park home depot just got a pallet of southdown in. it passed the vinegar test. most of the people in the store dont know what it is and will tell you we dont carry it, but if you go into the store its in the BUILDING MATERIALS department next to the concrete. it looks like its been outside awhile but its in plastic bags so im sure its still good. HTH.

I know I should post this as a new thread, but I figured I'd try here first. Can you move a DSB? I'm moving in a couple of months, and I was wondering how bad it would be to take the DSB out of the tank and put it into buckets, and transfer it to the new tank. I'm pretty sure this is not a good idea because of the anaerobic zones in the bottom of the sand that'll get all mixed up when I shovel it out. What about if I just drained the tank, and moved it with the DSB intact? It's a 75. I think four big guys could handle it with the sand. I might be worried about the tank though carrying that weight and not supported evenly. Hrm... This is going to suck.

Southdown-somwhere else to find it

Southdown-somwhere else to find it

If you are unhappy with getting your Southdown from HD and pet supply, you CAN get it another place! I just found some at ACE Hardware-they can order it, or the one by my house has it in stock. It's not that expensive there and since they are smaller than HD everyone knows what it is-no searching the store for the "dept. manager." Anyway, try your local ACE if you want some to see if they have it as well. My store only charged me 10-11 dollars for a bag. Big difference over where I used to buy it.

Good luck!

(I hope I did this right-I'm new....)

My advice would be DO NOT move the tank with the SB still in it. Sure chances are the tank will not break, but what if you loosen a seam and then months from now you spring a leak. It would be just as easy to take sand from the top layer probally not more then a inch deep, wouldnt want to take a chance of getting into the ucky stuff and use that to seed a new bed. A cup would be enough. Assuming that you have LR, even that would seed a new DSB. Hope this awnsers your question :)

I had a pallet transferred into Nashville by the local HD. I am there a lot and one of the sales reps did it for me. It took about an hour to get the Paperwork done and the local store made nothing on the sand. It cost me $100 plus delivery plus the std. price per bag.

Anything left in the Nashville area?? I bought a few bags last year, wish I had purchased more. setting up a tank for my son and could use 2 bags
