All you EVER wanted to know about Southdown

I just put southdown in my tank. It was a fresh setup. Unfortunately I did not have a 90gal container(s) to empty the tank out to start with dry sand.

So I used a pvc pipe and put the sand in the tank. Well after a about 1/4 the bag, stupid me, I realized I did not unplug one of the powerheads.

Anyway to make a long story short: I have 90gal of milk. I already put 50lbs in but I think I still need to add another 25lbs.

I have 50lbs of live sand from DRmacs to be delivered tomorrow along with a bunch of rock. I am only shooting for a 2" sand bed.

My question is this:

I have read in this thread where the silt is important and not to wash the sand or filter is out. But what if your not going to have a DSB, is it still the same. Right now I can't even see the bottom to know how much is in there.

I have a diatom filter that would clean in up within an hour but I don't want to do it if it will be detrimental to the system. Should I filter it out or not?

What are some opinions on this?

Greg

When you get the rock and sand from Dr. Mac (excellent choice if I do say so myself) :) , get it all in the tank, and your sandstorm will clear up in a day or two. Once you can see the rock, kinda blow the sand off of it with a baster. Not too hard though. While a 2" sandbed isn't what most reefers consider a DSB, it's still going to be benificial to your system. A word of advice from someone who is using the same LR... keep the ammonia levels as low as you can. BIG water changes as often as possible. There is a ton of life on that rock, and you should be able to keep alot of it alive if you keep the water quality as good as you can. I'd also recommend turning the lights on after a day or two. Start at a couple of hours a day, and work your way up to a full photoperiod over a couple of weeks. You might get a micro algae bloom, but just let it go. It'll help suck some of those nutrients out of the water column. It'll go away on it's own. If you find any Dictyota macro algae (do a search) on the rock, get it off ASAP. It got out of control in my tank for months. Good luck Greg. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Found SD in Rockford, IL

Found SD in Rockford, IL

I live in So Cal and my son-inlaw just picked up 250 lbs of Old Castle Stone Products, Tropical Playsand it passed the vinegar test, he bought it at the HD in Rockford, IL , phone# 815-391-8880. I am setting up a new 90 gal SW, I have a Amiracle Pro-line 2000 wet/dry that I want to turn into a refugium, and I need help with starting up, Could some one give me some pointers are point me in the right direction, I also have at least 180 lbs of rock that was live and someone let it dry out, so that will be the base rock (right) do I put that in right away with the SD sand and then start to cycle? Now how does a little ole' person like me get a hold of some Southdown in northern Cali??

The ppl at Home Depot look at me like I am nuts when I ask for it... :(

Ditto!

I've been to Home Depot and Lowes looking for the stuff, or even something close.

General purpose "play sand" is all I can find, and I seriously doubt thats what I'm looking for... :(

My son-inlaw is a long distance truck driver and I called all of the Home Depots on his route and found one in Rockford, IL that had the Tropical Playsand and I had him to pickup 5 bags for me, it passed the vinegar test, I had a saltwater aquarium some years ago , but I did not set it up, the LFS set it up for me, it has been dismantled for two years and now I am trying to setup a new 90 gal. that my husband bought me last month. I want a DSB and a refugium, How do I start the refugium in my old amiracle wet/dry filter??

Ok folks - so I'm in Greenville, SC and I can't find Southdown in either NC or SC. So where can I drive a truck and fill it up with either a couple pallets of southdown or pick up a bulk load?

Hi Meetalee

You can use the wet/dry, sans bioballs, with no problem. I'd make a DSB and add LR. Maybe plant it with some non-invasive macro algae like Halimeda. If you have pods in your main tank they will migrate over time to the fuge. PC lighting in fine for a fuge or you may consider T-5. I like fairly low flow in a fuge so you may consider putting a throttling valve on the discharge side of the pump.

I work at HD and have some good friends that will get it for me but we cant find it.
When i tried the SKU and UPC from Mako, it does not come up with anything.
If I can find it, I CAN and WILL get some.
Just need a way to find it.

Thanks for the Help..

There is a minimum of 5 pallets at the HD in Stroudsburg, Pa. I was just there.

Meetalee in SoCal???

Meetalee in SoCal???

hey ,

I am also in SoCal and I can't find Southdown anywhere, where were you able to find it? Please let me know. thanks.

does anyone know where to get southdown in Austin, Tx? i just checked the HD here and it didn't look like they have it. Earlier in this thread, someone mentioned ace hardware, i'll go check that out tomorrow...

Thanks!

If you pour vinegar on arganite based sand, it'll fizz. On silca based sand, it does nothing.

That way you know if its good sand or not. (you want it to fizz)
