Do you guys put lugols on the cuts? What do you do for them to keep brown jelly away? I just finally got a dremel with a Diamond blade, but I'm kinda scared...

Right after fragging I place mine into a bowl of Tank water with about 5 drops of Lugols in it for about 5 minutes... then when I place the frag back into the tank I make sure that it is in pretty high flow area for a couple of days to carry away wastes and dead tissues... since I started this procedure I have not lost a frag...
I frag ALOT!

Hi Doc,
I know...I got your UFO from Ebay a while back :D. How soon do you start feeding again, I'm thinking after you move them out of the flow?

1-2 days and they eat like hogs... actually as soon as they open they start eating LOL I just dont feed them directly for a bit to prevent infections... If ever you do get and brown jelly on a micro colony frag it immediatly... the frags will prolly survive... if you do nothing the whole colony goes fast.... I have not had this problem since I started with the Lugols and Flow procedure. Glad you liked the frag... I like to think I have some of the BEST clients :)

I do love it, and I can't wait to try more. You do such a great job with your frags, and your pictures posted on RC are amazing...In case you haven't noticed this is some heavy kissing up because someday I think I won't be able to live any longer without a Pink Lemonade or Pink Floyd or Sweet Tooth :D Just have to wait for the ol' pocket book to catch up with my new sickness!

Oh, now that I can shut down the drool valve for a minute, one more question: do you guys ever run water through airline tubing over the frag as you are cutting to prevent the blade from burning the flesh? I read this a while back...I thought it may be a bit of an electricution hazard...

Fresh water on glass, SW on yer fraggin, prevents burning the coral and blade as it can get really hot, some corals arent dense and isnt necessary. Coulda swore I saw sparks when buzzin down on my Leptastrea

Sometimes just scoring it with the dremel and following it through with a pry-bar works great and sometimes downright necessary ;)

Just remember to rinse your tools with FW, then lubricate when done ;P

:)No, I meant if your cutting glass then use regular water, but corals you'll want to keep some salt water on hand.

FWIW, IMHO IBBL ;)
OK, help a girl out here...IBBL? Got the rest, I guess I better watch what I ask for

BTW, when you're lubricating your tools remember what you are using them for. Try to lubricate with something that's not going to kill your corals. I use olive oil.

I have an old bottle of contact lens cleaner... when the renue had run out I rinsed out the bottle... it has a very small nozzel almost like a jet... each time I frag I fill this bottle with tank water and then after each cut I spray down the cuts to clear them of coral dust and debris... I also keep a toothbrush on hand and after a cut I dip it in the water and BUZZ the brush against the diamond blade to keep it clear of all of the gookey coral dust and it cuts better...

MUST WEAR GOOGLES! I never follow rules but this is not an option LOL ...

Thank You for the compliments Wendy :) I'll talk nerdy to you anytime you want

Man I hate fragging. I've had the worst luck but a few days ago I finally got it. Batteries die (big mistake, should have gotten corded dremel), mandel too small for the large diamond bit, my buddy drew a little blood. I thought I had it down the other day and made some good cuts going right over the top (had to because of the rocks they were on) and last night as I was checking healing - I realized I reeeeaaally screwed up. I had a 25 polyp colong of Pink Floyd and I cut the top off, about 10 polyps so I could keep the top 10 and remount smaller frags of the rest - and I left the other 15 polyps out!!! I was so panicky trying to get things back in the tank I forgot about the mother. The ring of 15 is a goner but I did get a nice big 10-12 frag mounted flush on a disc for growth.

Fortunately I didn't do the same thing with my P Lem colony (which I like much more) - I got a good cut off the top of about 10 polyps and have a ring of about 20 polyps left I can remount after I cut them up into several frags. They were on a rock that pretty much ended any future growth so I had to.

The learning curve was super steep for me and I made a lot of mistakes but hopefully I have it down now. I didn't use Lugols but thats a great tip Doc, I wish I would have.
