Almost Done

Both surge tanks are down. One has been converted to a fuge. One Dart online.

Next, going bare bottom. Welcome to the 21 century. I'm still keeping my potato chip pavona.

Kevin thanks for the nitrate filter, AKA the corn fed clam.

Paul & Mike

I did mount the purple tipped green hammer near the green tipped purple hammer. Lets hear you say that ten times fast.

Paul, no I haven't fixed your chiller yet but I will.

The acros are all about 10" away from 250W 20K bulbs. Thats like being 12" away from your 400w bulbs. Incredible colors coming up!

Steve

Thanks for the LE GSP. They really are nice!

My mandarins are mating. My clarkii's are mating. My yellow coral gobies are mating and killing yet another small section of the acro I got from TFP. I should probably turn off the Barry White. Now that Tim's acro is only 10" away from the MH bulb I think it won't mind the yellow coral gobies, as if it ever did.

Lisa (wife) and Eric (son) are home. Time to do the family thing.

 Too funny! You gotta watch that mood music!

So, why the move away from the surge systems? Just too much of a mess with the salt creep? I love the idea, but the reality is keeping me from incorporating a surge system.
I've got a RDSB/Fuge above my frag system, draining into the 60g frag tank. It's nice, but having a tough time with the micro bubbles bursting and leaving salt on the rim of the tank. I may drop the fuge return down to the sump to avoid this, but it was easier, and possibly more beneficial to drop it into the frag tank instead.

I think you will like BB, it is clean and very responsive to tuning for coloration with quick results.

Are you running any sand in the sump, or are going with a "purest" BB and going sterile?

I look forward to seeing the new set up Brian. I debated BB over and over, but nothing can replace the visual effects of sand. I also really like wrasses.

I'm not trying to hijack, but won't you miss shots like this. Here is my new 180 that I am still tuning ;)

Hey Jeremy

Yeah, the salt spray is the problem. I really like the looks of the surge but the lid must be cleaned daily, or more, to let the light in. I just wasn't willing to do that.

I had the same bubble problem with my fuge draining into my display tank. I spent a couple hours looking for a solution on Google but didn't find any. No one responded to my request for help on the RC DIY forum.

I solved the problem by slowing the return rate down to about 100 GPH. In other words, I didn't solve the problem.

Me too. Darn microbubles. Who's the idiot who designed my system

I will look to place a filter pad in my return area to help soften the water crash before it hits the return area. The other option is for me to T off another section of my fuge supply line and send it directly to my skimmer, thus lessening the amount of flow in the fuge :)

Doug

The rock re-work I did revealed just how much detritus my socks miss.

I have two RDSBs with removable sections (not shown). I can change out 1/4 of my sand w/o introducing oxygenated water into the others.

Nice tank! Eye candy is always appreciated.

I'll post a whole tank pic tonight. This may the be last round of pics with a sand bottom.

Yes, I will miss the sand bottom look. I cut some rocks in half with a masonary saw. I'm going to set them on the bottom, flat side down, to break it is up a bit.

Also, the sand is a nice barrier for intrusive stuff. I may turn out that sand is easier to maintain then a glass bottom. If so, I'll go back.

Kay

Thanks, it has been a crazy month. But after the dust settled last night I was convinced it is was worth it. I should mention that was after my third glass of wine

Reefers are always welcome to stop by. My favorite beer is the hefe from BJs Brewery. My favorite wine is the BV cab :p

Hey Mark

Installing a T is exactly what I had to do. Still, at 100 GPH that is turning over the 15 or so gallons of water in my 30 gallon fuge six times per hour. That's plenty.

Wow Brian!

Major (for such a sustaining system) changes pending!!! Thanks for posting the plans and updates here. Good to know about your favorite beverages! :D I ended up with a frag of that Potato Chip Pavona and it is my favorite frag from the swap that so far has survived! Thanks! And by the way the only one that didn't survive appears to be from hasty fragging practices.

I had sensed that you had future intentions of doing something about those surge tanks. Are you still going to use the MARS skimmer when all this is done? every day that I feed pellets I swear I think about how cool it would be to have an automatic DIY feeder with the X-10 system.

Just did a weekend with the family thing and came back to a few heads of green hammer that went the way of brown slime. UGHH I swear I need to frag those pieces sooner!!! Hope all goes well and you're happy with the new BB and other changes.

Brian, thats the original.

I am a huge wrasse fan, so there is no way I could not have a sand bed. I felt bad enough to get rid of my black percs because I took out their home.

Here is a pic of the WC from last night. Standard 18-55 lens.

Hey Chris

Thanks. Converting the surge tanks to fuges was my first priority. Now that the salt spray isn't preventing the light from getting in I am going to...

Replace 1K GPH Poseiden PS4 sump return pumps with Ocean Runner 500 GPH pumps
Install 2nd Dart recirc pump
Install 2nd MARS Skimmer
Remove sand from bottom

That pavona also kept the MARS raffle table going for years. Did you notice how I slotted the plug and glued the chip in. I love my masonary saw. That technique works great for monti caps too.

Sorry to hear about your hammer.

Hey Mark

Nice favia! Your lighting looks pretty white. What temp is it?

My next acquisition will be a dragons revenge (AKA dragons eye) favia. I hear they found a bunch of them in Australia and the prices are coming down.

I built a PVC tunnel for my blue spotted jaw fish. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the PVC tunnel and cover it with rubble or just drill a tunnel into one of the rocks.

Sweet. I have 250 watt radiums 20k on the blue waves and 320 watts of VHO's on my tank ;)
