Mark,

I've had the guys from http://solarrochester.com/ come to do a presentation at work and they have installed most of the solar and Large Wind units in Rochester, actually they are in Victor.

A hybrid system is the best in my opinion since we only get an avg of 4.5 peak sun hours a day averaged over the whole year. Also if you can guarantee 2.5 mph wind in your area WindTamer is the most promising from what I've seen. I've been thinking about building my own Vertical Axis Wind Turbine too but living in Penfield doesn't give me much options.

I also have a coworker looking at installing Skystream Windturbines but they need at least mounted on a 80 ft pole. As long as you have acreage then that is not a problem.

The best bet is Grid-tied since having a battery system is more expensive and battery life is only about 7 years before you have to replace it. Also yif you generate more than you can use RG&E will pay you for the power provided. The most efficient SOlar panel is made by Sunpower too.

I've been looking at all this stuff too and the initial out of pocket cost is still pretty high but after all the tax credits for example a 2KW Solar system may only cost you $1-3k installed which isn't that bad.
