Alternatives to murdering your fish?

Just wondering what you do with a fish that's grown too large for your tank when the LFS won't take them? I have a Hippo Tang that's quite large (8-9" I think) and is pretty cramped in my 72g bowfront. I'd like to add a few smaller fish instead but can't do it without overloading the biofilter. I recently stole a few of my live rocks for a second tank and ended up losing some inverts due to an ammonia spike. It's back to zero now, but I'm nervous about adding anything new. I inherited this fish with a tomato clown, yellow tang, and coral beauty when I bought this tank about a month ago.

Can't find a forum that will let me post as a new member, and even craigslist won't let you post pets... Thanks

try these links and see if any one close to you want the fish

I don't know what part of Ohio you are from' here is four Ohio reef aquarium clubs maybe one is close to where your from.

Two thoughts, if you haven't already tried:

- Look for local reef clubs. Someone with a really large tank might be looking. They are really nice fish. also Post this in the FS/FT forum and also reef fish forum here.

- Check for Aquarium Service companies in your area. They always need large specimens for Office / Business displays.

Any public aquariums near you? I strongly suggest researching a fish before you put it in your tank. Sounds like your well stocked as it, is. I would not add anything else. It's a total waste to murder a perfectly good fish.

Note: this fish came with the tank.

I second the notion of reef clubs; you might also ask your lfs if they know of any mega-tanks in your area, at, say, doctor's offices, restaurants, etc. Investigate the mechanics of shipping a really large fish. I'm not sure, and will ask, but if you are willing to give the fish to a good home in return for shipping costs that might not consititute an illicit ad. Stand by while I try to get info on that.

Yes, it seems that investigating is all I do these days... But, this particular fish came with the tank. I swear he pollutes as much as all the other fish combined. Here in Columbus I tried AA and Phishy and Jack's with no luck. Forum won't let me post since I'm new. Willing to give him away though if anyone knows of a good home.

The ruling from the mods is that posting in general forum to give the fish away for shipping would be in violation: BUT posting in the local club forums to give the fish away with local pickup would not be in violation...does that make sense? So you can post in the Ohio regional forums offering the fish for pickup for anyone that would like to come to your place to take him. You can PM any interested party your address.

You are not too far from a pet store here in Fort Wayne that is very open to taking saltwater fish. The name of the pet store is 33 Aquarium and they gave me $25 in store livestock credit for a large yellow tang two months ago with no problem. Worst case you could drive it over to them. We have some really nice saltwater pet stores here you could check out as well while you are in town.

I have to disagree on craig's list - they have a strict no pets policy. I tried to post my Tomato Clown and they pulled it right away. Then I posted it as a "will trade" and they took that down also... I can post it as free and I think that's okay, but not as a sale or trade.
