Always be cautious........

Yes I know the owner and the manager. Im not exaggerating when I said I was in there 3-5 times a week. I knew all the employees and they knew me on a first name bases. The manager they hired was great and he had all there corals looking great but he could only do what the owner allowed him to do. Im just going to stick with Creative from now on.

Mr Harvard Sorry for your loss, when you are ready for coral let me know I have some nice pieces even colonies I will Dr. you up with. I am sorry for your loss and thanks for sharing your experience with all of us.

I have lots to choose from Gratis for you.

I think they got a new owner. I think it was after this event as well. Not sure though don't take my word on it

They've been transitioning owners for a few months now. Just as Sirrealism said, when Tom and Jackie were around you'd go in there would be classic rock playing, Tom would be walking around barefoot with a beer in his hand. Place was great. This new owner though, idk, seems like a shady dude. I do still like their original employees though. I highly doubt this place will be around for much longer.

I really appreciate that. I have seen your tank and I would be happy to have anything your offering.

Yup that was typical Tom. The new owner was headed in yhe right direction and the store was looking alot better. Like I said up until this happened I had no complaints. I dont want to see any store go out of business I just wanted to share my expierence.

Dude, that is horrid! I am hoping that at least the LFS will replace your fish and coral. I had a similar situation a little over a year ago when I got some of that bad carbon that was going around, maybe some of you remember. Anyway, I changed my carbon in my nano and every fish that was anywhere close to the powerhead died within 5 min. SUCKED! Sure enough I googled it and there was a recall for carbon that had traces of copper. The LFS was not aware, but they pulled the carbon. They told me the would replace anything I had receipts for. Now I keep all of my receipts together in a box.

What REALLY sucks about your situation is that someone used food grade canisters for something else and then steam cleaned them. I wonder how often that happens.

The new "manager/owner" is JR. He isn't too bad, you really need to talk to him to get on good terms with him. He can get you items close to cost if he knows you and your a customer. But he is rarely ever around and kinda stays away when he is.

IMO RR was going down hill and has been going down hill way before JR took over. Seeing the same dusty old merchandise that has been on the wall for years at prices that were not competitive, is disappointing. I would go there 2x a week and when you see the same rotten dead anemone sitting in the same tank, or dead fish wedged in rocks twice 5 days apart thats unacceptable. Thats how bad RR was getting before tom had left.
Those who knew Tom and Jackie well knows they were going thru a lot and not intentionally it was reflecting in their business.

Right before Tom and Jackie left, there where more parties, and more sales due to JR taking over and trying to clear out some old merchandise. Empty shelfs are no good, there dont sell space or air. JR listens to what people want in stock, not just what the reps tell him to carry cause what good is all this merchandise that isn't in demand but is the latest and greatest. He has been managing RR for months now so its been a transition for some time.
The place is a lot more clean, not smoking pot in front of children, prices and quality are a lot better, tanks look cleaner than ever, and yes RR is going thru a big change but in reality the places has been going down for a while and it needs some TLC. I think once JR gets "settled" in the place will only get better.

Its unfortunate that the contaminated jug was sold and had such a negative impact on your system. I would definitely bring the jug to JR and let him smell it to show what was sold as food grade. He is not the person to allow that to happen (or at least thats what I get from him). He prides himself on quality and thats just unacceptable.

I kind have been avoiding LFS and leaning more towards local aquaculture for environmental reasons, but for the dry goods it is nice to look at items, compare, and evaluate before buying. Something that can not be done on the internet. LFS need our business to stay competitive and reasonable.
A Local fish store should be a placefor beginners, first timers, newbies can go and get all the knowledge they can handle, ask all the silly question in the world, A place to begin that has everything needed to start this hobby, a place to meet up, a place to see the livestock in person, to take the family, to have pride in the community WE NEED LFS's.

I hope Rockin Reef will only get better with time cause it is basically the bug that got me into this bitter sweet hobby! I would hate to see another LFS fail. Its bad for the hobby. Its bad for the community.

This is just how I see things, a non biased opinion and thats all.

I agree with what you are saying and JR was always very helpful and they are headed in the right direction. If you read back I have had nothing bad to say about the store other than this situation. I also said I don't want to see any LFS go out of business. You have to understand that I went to this store 3-5 times a week sometimes everyday after work I would stop by and not only buy from them but just hang out and chat. This place was like my hangout until this happened. This is the part that really upsets me the most is that they know me well and nothing was done to make it right. I miss going by there and hanging out. As far as taking the buckets back, they are well aware of the problem I had them smell the ones they had left and they 2 smelled like a chemical. The manager admitted that they were not properly cleaned and that they should have never sold them. I really wanted them to do something to make it right or even apologize. I waited 3 weeks before posted or mentioning this to anyone not involved. I wish them well but I personally will not continue to do business there.

I understand your point of view. You did respect them as a business but a careless mistake on their behalf cost you time, money, pride, etc. A low blow. You know what goes around comes around. Its just a fact!
I really thought JR would have been more helpful but I was wrong.
I don't blame you. With time you become attached to the corals. They're living animals.
I have not interest or gain from RR I was just stating some things.
The fact that they know their product caused near total lost and they did NOTHING is absurd.

sorry to read about your loss,i wouldnt trust RR for anything except fish food and equipment,to me the corals and fish for the most part never seem really healthy.i hope you recover and get back on track.

Thanks Chris its been awhile since ive heard from you. Hows your tank(s)?

There is always 3 sides to every story, yours, his and the truth is usually some where in between.

No one or LFS is perfect. In 10 years I have had an issue with every store I have shopped with. IMO it is all in how both parties handle it.

I wish people wouldn't be so quick to bash publicly. This is a close hobby and words do have an affect on businesses. I hope yours recovers.

Wow... Mr. Harvard if 1/10 of what JR said is accurate you should be ashamed of your self. JR I appreciate hearing your side and I hope the mods respect that.

I only posted what I knew to be the facts. The day you loaned me the bucket was deffinetly not the day in question! In fact I still have all those buckets and I decided to keep the 1 clean bucket you lent me and paid for it the next time in. You say in young when in fact I am older than you. If your refering to my knowlege in the hobby thats a joke. I have had to help your staff many times with questions about corals that they did not know. Im not even going to get into your former manager because I only know one side as to why he is no longer there. You place blame on him but he is the one running your store and the one representing it that you placed in charge. I waitied weeks for you all to make this right like you said you would but no one said or did anything so I posted the truth about what happened to me. I never once asked what the difference between two kinds of salt were just what salinity you mixed them at because if I am corect you mix them differently? You can come on here and try and defend and twist the facts and place blame on other people but the fact remains it was your stores neglegence that caused this to happen. Only after this happened was I told they were not cleaned not before. I never once had anything bad to say about you or your store and always had nice things to say. Let me make this perfectly clear I never slandered you or lied! In fact your staff will vouch for that! This is a public forum where fellow refers can voice there opinion and inform other's of yhere expierences. This is simply all I have done. You can try and call my character and knowledge of the hobby into question here but there are tons of people in this community that can vouch for that. I can assure you I am both honest and knowlegeable. I wish you no ill will and hope your business continues to grow. Im sorry it had to come to this.

If this was accurate there would have been no post. ..ask the employees see what they tell you...

You have heard my side and his you all can chose to believe either makes no diffwrence to me. I dont blame him for trying to defend his store. I have almost 2k posts on this site helping ang giving back to the community he has 2 that he only has because I called his store out amd told what happened to me. Feel free to read back through all of mine and see if I have ever had anything bad to say about him prior or anyone else that wasnt true.
