I couldn't help but laugh when I read this. . . after Being away from reefin for about 8 years I set up a 30 gal "fish only" tank last fall ,cause the wife said we weren't spending a ton of money on this again. . . well a few months later the 30 is a mini reef and I have a new 90 gal RR, metal halides, killer custom stand and canopy, and all the toys to go with it. The best part is we went the other day to get 1 fish, and she came home with 60 lbs more live rock, 2 colonies of Zoo's and 4 fish

I guess I'll take the under.

no no no... take the over... trust me... :)

I really really can't afford nice lights right now... no way, no how... although my wife did mention that she did want to go look for decorations for the tank today... I wonder if corals are considered "decorations"... :)

Welcome neighbor.

Thanks!

I'm begining to notice alot of people near me... thats really good... now I just need to find out where everyone in naperville/aurora buy thier fish from...

http://rods-reef.com/

If they don't have it, they'll get it. Or ask here first, someone is bound to have a resource for you before you spend to much money at the more expensive stores. This includes hardware.

Oh, and something I just learned this past week, Petsmart will price match ANY competitors (even online guys) price, just bring in a copy of the ad. They have limited saltwater supplies, but in a pinch it may be worth it for something basic.

DeefReef seems close enough to buy, say a fish from... but rods seems a bit far away... I'll have to see... there are a couple places around here... one really close...

Hmmm... Petsmart you say... I'll have to check them out sooner or later...

It starts out so simple (DA Dum...Jaws theme music here) ...Fish only honey...Da Dum...Well, maybe a couple of mushrooms...Da Dum....Ok, we'll add some zoas...Da dum dum dum dum dum dum....AAARRRGGGHHH...attack of the money sucking, time leaching, sanity draining REEF TANK...Welcome fellow addict....pretty soon you'll be cruising the forums, e-bay...anywhere just to get that next deal...just one more fish...I'll just up the number of water changes...I could probably shoe horn another coral there...come on...baby...I can make it fit...once you start thinking about it...it's TOO LATE...YOU'RE HOOKED... By the way...ENJOY!!!

Just one won't hurt....

Just one won't hurt....

Come on, just one won't hurt. Maybe a little frag, or one mushroom. Everyone else is doing it. You can stop anytime. What's it going to hurt? Its really good for you anyway. Its educational and relaxing.

Just one little polyp.

You won't even feel it.

Try it, you'll like it.

Maybe I over due it once in awhile, sure, but I'm going to start cutting back. Maybe just on special occasions or weekends. In fact, I'll start right after the holidays are over.

I would reconsider going out to Rod's Reef. He has some wonderful things and his knowledge can't be beat. Trust me, pretty soon you will be willing to drive for hours to find that rare item!

Deep Reef has great selection on fish but I really like going to Rod's (Dekalb) or Jimmy's (Wooddale) for corals. They both are great people to deal with!

Were's Jimmy's in Woodale...I'm up for a short drive...I'll just look, I promise...well maybe just one small coral...well maybe 2 small corals...ok, 1 large and 1 small....no wait...2 make that 3 large...I can quit anytime I want....OH SURE I CAN ;0)!!!

Here is his website: http://www.jimmysreef.com/

Must... ignore... doubters...

must... follow.... wife's.... wishes....

On another note... anyone ever hit these stores?

Upscale Aquatics... on rt 59 near rt 30... (plainfield?)
Pet Fun... on rt 59 and 95th street (naperville)
Land and Sea... on rt 59 and 127th street (plainfield)

I've bought stuff from the last 2 stores... the first store seemed... I dunno... kinda odd... lots of fish, shark tank, but very... I dunno... just seemed outta place to me...

As for your swing arm salinity tester thingy. You can still use it. What you will need is a friendly local reefer (there are several as you can see) who owns a refractometer to come by and calibrate your swing arm for you. Most swing arms are off by +/- .001 to .003. Once you determine how yours reads you will be fine to use it.

Welcome to the community and the addiction....er...I mean hobby.

PS - I take the under as well (double my bet if you get over to Rod's or Jimmy's)

Pet Fun: Decent for frozen food and dry goods. I would avoid livestock.
Land and Sea: Unimpressed with marine area. Walked in once, no need for me to return.

Try Petland on Rt 59, near the mall.

So... who's not busy? :)

I need to visit both those places and get in on these bets... I could make enough to buy the supplies to make a reef tank... :)

Hmmm... and I thought Pet Fun looked good...

But I agree with you on Land and Sea... I stop in every now and then to price some things... I usually end up buying from Pet Fun though...

I need to go shopping tonight anyways... the person working on my tank wants me to get a back of crushed coral and put it in my sump... (filter area? I'm not 100% positive about all these things yet...)

There's several excellent stores in the Chicagoland area but I havn't found much of a need to go beyond Deep Reef or Rod's. Not that the other stores aren't good but those two have everything I need, at the price, with the right selection and great advice.

If I lived more north or east, there probably are some other stores that would be my mainstay but for west or south, those are my favorite.

Just checking around... Dekalb is a bit of a ride... and although Downers Grove isn't that far, the three places I mentioned are within 5-10 minutes of my house...

Trust us...go to these other stores and you will see the difference between what is close to you and what is a little drive. It's night and day. :)
