Ammonia spike in QT tank

In a QT tank you can keep the fish isolated and can add any medicines you need without having to worry about hurting live rock, corals and stuff like that.

Yeah, well put. It would take me 3 paragraphs to say that. When you type with 3 fingers and stare at the keyboard, its easy to get windy!

Stopped by the LFS tonight and got some frozen mysis shrimp (ended up with a cleaner shrimp & a feather duster also) and did tests when I got home. Ammonia at zero, finally.

Noticed the larger of the two acting a little strange and saw the the temp was down to 75. Switched heaters (taking back to 78) and started feeding. The larger of the two never touched a thing. I tried the new mysis, formula one flakes and brine. The smaller ate all three. Currently it is on the bottom in the corner by the heater. Movement appear normal, just slower.

They were both sleeping in the PVC elbow when I got up this morning. I did another test and it showed a slight ammonia reading so I did another 50% W/C. After the W/C she started pacing the glass. So her movements seem better than last night.

ever get an ammonia alert moniter? Seachem makes them and they are really innexpensive (around 5 dollars) and super easy to use. They have a color chart on them that changes if any ammonia builds up. I use them in my qt and although I still do liquid tests for their greater accuracy it definitely gives me more peace of mind.

Turns out the reason she wasn't eating is I think she has internal parasites (found long white stringy poo tonight). She hasn't eaten while I'm watching since the 8th. I also noticed the smaller has stringy poo also but is still eating. I've got a couple different thread going trying to find out how to treat. Any help would be appreciated.

Praziquantel works for internal parasites so prazipro would probably be my first choice. They also make food containing praziquantel. I think Jungle labs makes a flake food containing it specifically for treating internal parasites and it should be pretty easy to find at any fish shop.

I found some Jungle parasite clear tablets.
Active ingredients: praziquantel, diflubenzuron, metronidazole & acriflavine

I did a half dose and the sting hanging from their anus came off almost immediately. The smaller one quit eating this morning.

I'll try a find some Prazipro. Thanks.

I do 1 week para guard , then run carbon for a day followed by a 50% water change.
then I run prazi pro for 1 week then run carbon for a day then 50% water change
and then run cupramine for 4 weeks then run carbon, then 50% water change
at this point they get a 2 week observation period where i do 50% water changes from my DT so they don't need to be acclimated .
and pick up a bottle of PRIME it will neutralize ammonia/nitrates

and NEVER put a fish in your DT without QTing first and all inverts should be QTed for 30 days

if you put 1 fish in there without proper QT you will just be wasting your time/money
