I have water filtered with RO?DI. I tested and amonia is ZERO. After I added and mixed INSTANT OCEAN to the water. I checked the Amonia is high. Why AMONIA IS there? Is that a problem?
Yes, it sounds very unlikely that the salt mix would have increased the ammonia. I'd get a second opinion on that. What type of test kit are you using, and does it have an expiration date? You may also want to ask in the Chemistry forum. Those guys may have some ideas.
When you changed the water did you stir up a lot of the sand? How long has your tank been set up? There have been reports that some batches of salt have had this problem. If you tested with the same test kit and had 0 amm before adding the saltwater and then got an ammonia reading after, I would re-verify the test by conducting another one with the same test kit. If it comes back high I would contact the salt manufacturer and find out. What salt brand are you using?
And a question I just have to ask to make sure we are going down the right road…. Did you allow your tank to cycle?

This may sound strange but I was told by Jim at TheFilterGuys that he read an artical about a guy that did a test using RO/DI water & testing different salts. After mixing the salt, he let it sit for a few days ( maybe a week ?? ) with a heater & powerhead to keep everything moving & ready for a water change. After doing his test, he found that there were levels of nitrates, ammonia....ect..ect. It was in the salts & came out when mixed with the water. Each salt had different levels.
Thanks you. All of you, guys. I check with water from my friend tank to find out the validity of my test chemical. My first setup tank is 55 gls with 80lbs LR already cured, bought from established tank. And 4" LS. 3 weeks cycling.
Salt mix: INSTANT OCEAN. After you mix salt, how many days we have to wait to be ready for water change? I will have other brand salt mix water to test to find out. What goes wrong? and amonia is high.
I just started a new 55 gls tank for 3 weeks. I already want to upgrade to 150gl or 200 gl. This 55gl tank is just a way to learn hand on experience. I spent so much time here at the forum. Later on the big problem is my wife not my salt water aquarium.
