Amphiprion Chrysopterus: A Breeding Pair

Beautiful.
Jordan, do you also have a BTA in the tank? How long have the two anemones being together and any adverse effects that you can see?

thanks minh, there is infact a small rose bubble tip in there. it was a surviving tentacle after the softball sized parent went through my reeflo dart two years ago. they have been together for over six months now, and they appear to not mind each other. neither have moved in months.

so i slid a piece of acrylic over the spot where the original nest had been laid. i watched the pair alot yesterday, and it appears the male is unhappy with the tile. but, based on the amount of cleaning theyre doing together, i suspect they will be spawning right next to the tile or in the front left corner of the tank. it seems they really prefer the angle because most of their attention is being spent there.

i also started some cultures of nannochloropsis and isochrysis in my closet hatchery.

the cultures were donated to me by a fellow friend in the area, and i think ill eventually switch out the isochrysis for some tetraselmis. so ill play around with this for a week or so, then begin some experimentation with rotifer growing.

so other than that, the pair seem to be unaffected by the addition of the piece of acrylic and appear to actively clean locations regardless. in theory, another nest should be coming sometime this weekend.

What about using something clear that you can remove from the tank? A thin piece of acrylic or the like? Since yours are spawning on the glass, maybe they wouldn't be so spooked if your plate was less obvious.

yep, thats exactly what im using. clear acrylic.

its been said its too smooth. but, im going to see what happens.

Just seems most like the texture of the back of tiles...maybe they prefer this of the glass. Point is to try to get them to like it more so they spawn on it next time, Just is what worked for me. :) Nice work on the cultures...I used a shoe rack from Target that was like seven bucks.

Rack is full now...Hope this helps...Carl

I see how it is. You just come into my house, I just give you the most satisfying phyto in my life and now you don't ever call me back!?

So any news on the clowns?

at this very moment, the pair is voraciously cleaning right around the same area they spawned last time. however, since last time, one of the two sea swirls that feed the tank gave out. so i adjusted it in a semi permanent position, and also added a maxijet 1200 to the tank to increase the flow. something i had wanted to do for some time. there are now three scored acrylic tiles around the anemone. however, neither of which is where theyre trying to prepare a nest. i also turned on my moon light last night, and switched to an OSI spirulina flake.

if i were to slip in a tile right where they are aggressively cleaning, what do you think the chances are of them continuing their behavior there? the female is visibly swollen, and i have never seen such continued, combined effort from both of them in a specific area. if i had to guess, i would imagine theyll breed tonight.

any one ever tried to slip in a tile or spawning medium over a preferred spawning area, and had their pairs ignore the change and proceed with the spawn on the tile instead?

Just put a plain old tile near the area. Leave it there until it gets too covered in algae or until they spawn on it.

I had an onyx pair that would spawn in the corner of the glass, nest after nest, until finally one night they switched to the tile and never went back to the glass.

thanks for keeping in touch john. ill slip one in and see where it goes.

tonight however, was very exciting. ironically enough, it was valentines day on the second spawn of my clownfish. i happened to be present for the entire thing. the temperature was 82 degrees. the pH was 8.29. around noon today, i had turned on my RO unit, which feeds directly into my tanks. the salinity is rarely affected by much, but it may be worth noting. i fed my anemones silversides today. and was watching man on fire at the time spawning began.

at approximately 8pm, almost on the dot, the clownfish began to lay eggs. it wasnt until 8:06pm that i noticed 5 eggs on the glass and for the next 54 minutes watched the pair lay a beautiful mass of eggs. much deeper orange than the previous nest. much larger. and much more organized. i took as many pictures as i could of the process. if interrupted, either by a passing body or movement outside the tank, they were quick to continue.

for 54 minutes they spawned. and here are the pictures:

it appears the late night work on the tank i did two days ago: stopping all water flow, readjusting flow, adding a 295 gph powerhead and the addition of more tiles did not interrupt them very much; which was my biggest concern.

compare the picture above taken on feb 14th, to the nest laid on jan 29th:

much larger quantity and better coloration.

WOW!!! as you know I've been away for a while. I just celebrated my one year anniv with my Chrys pair but no spawns yet. My male is so tiny still it concerns me, the female is near or over 3" and the male is still 1 1/2"

Good Luck Jordan

sty, no i didnt. the nest vanished one morning. either it hatched, and then the parents ate the nest. or it didnt hatch, and the parents just ate the clutch. either way they appeared to be ready to hatch the night they disappeared....but as marina stated, something didnt look right. the initial color of the eggs was pretty yellow, and not the orange of this current clutch.

thanks dave.

ez, thank you and good job on your first year. maybe boost your feedings. even when my clowns werent spawning, i fed them as often as i could. i loved it just as much as they did.

THis is awesome!! Woohooooo!!! I'll try post more in the pnwmas.org as well.

I'm still going to try the next Bicinctus batch, the first one I tried of 27-29 only had 6 survivors. They are having trouble through metamorphosis. The six lone survivors are doing well at the moment. I did take some photos, but will post a little later.

I can't wait to see those Chrys babies!!!

Best,
Ilham
