Amphiprion latezonatus spawned

i love this hobby. i like how you are able to get one of the hardest pair of clowns to breed while keeping them in an environment that is almost against any recommendations from experts/books. it shows you how much we do not know. congrats!.

Congrats, hope you have continued success.
I recently aquired an adult pair and will have them in their new cooler home tomorrow. The female is huge.
I hope to be seeing some eggs from them soon.

Update: I lost all of the first collected spawn (probably due to my inexperience). I am doing much better with the second batch which is now on Day #7. At least 20 and probably closer to 30 fat fry remaining. The fry have proved to be exceptionally light sensitive (at least compared to what I have read about other clownfish fry). Any light stronger than the dim 100 watt ceiling light has 2/3's of the fry trying to swim in to the bottom of my rearing tank. They also go after any reflections off the sides of the tank (which are black, but still reflective). I am feeding baby brine now along with the rotifers. We should have meta in 4-7 days. I am hopeful I will have ready juveniles by the end of June.
There is also a new nest that was layed on Saturday, so the pair is keeping a regular 13-14 day cycle. I haven't decided whether to collect it or not.

On a side note, my oblique lined dottybacks (Cypho purprascens) spawned and I collected the "egg ball" today when I saw eyes. The eggs hatched shortly after dark. We'll see how I do with these guys...

Well collecting them will give you practice. There is also a chance what you have doesn't make it through the meta stage and you will be kicking yourself for not collecting if that happens.
I would change that bulb to a 75 or 60 and see what happens.
Congrates on the dottybacks. Too bad they are such jerks.

Getting close...Not sure why this one died, 8 days old, looks close to meta (see the black in the tail), around 6 mm in length. Still 20-30 hanging on.

idk if you already do this but i read another thread and they said they had better success raising them with really green water.

Have you checked the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in the fry tank?
When I bred clowns I never kept rotifers near as high in number as recommended. I don't think I ever had any deaths after day 2. Different species yet the same in most ways. Martin Moe did it years and years ago with plankton from the ocean he collected with nets.
I believe he also did Latz. and that was in the undergravel filter days.
What size water changes are you doing daily on the fry tanks? I would do 30-50 % a day until they get through the meta stage. I would also not use new mixed water. I would take the water from the main display to get some helpful bacteria.

The rearing tank is piggybacked on to my clown/anemone tank using a Litermeter III cycling 20 liters in/out per day so water quality is not an issue. I loose more rotifers this way but the water quality is great. I also add phyto at least 2x/day.

Hey Rob,
Moe never spawned latz. What makes this so cool is that this is only the fourth or fifth documented Latz spawn (from what I have read) and maybe the only one here in the states!

Martin moe documented Latezonatus on his list of captive bred marine species. MAybe it wasn't him but it was done.
A facility in Australia in fact has bred latezonatus and has a couple hundred of the babies on display. Not just 10 days old either. I will try to remember the name of the facility but I found it by searching Latezonatus in some manor.
Believe me I have bred clowns and it is always cool even if it's ocellaris.

day #12, about 16 remain. I lost about 15 of them 2 days ago, but no recent losses. Hopefully we should have meta soon... New nest should hatch tonight, but my main culture of rotifers crashed and I am going on vacation the first week of June so I think I might wait until I get back to try again.

John,

Good to hear some continue to do well! My percs are up to a half inch now. Your latz seem to have a long time to meta - is it due to the cooler water?

And pm sent also....
