An LFS tried to charge me £1000 pounds for a 40 gallon

So me and my Mam where trying to get a 100 gallon + tank and they gave us a price that was £1700 we said is there anything we could get for £1000 and they said a 40 gallon

Well.. did you get any specifics on what was being offered to you exactly?

It could be a "complete package"...
This is a 20 gallon for £700 so 1000 for a 40G isn't too bad depending on exactly what it is..

If it is just the tank ,that is robbery. You can get 40 gallon for 40$ during the "1$ for gallon events".

Unfortunately the LFS around here also leaves a lot to be desired and often leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I deal with them. Around here the workers act like they are too cool to offer any help and never smile...

Yea but the tank we decided to get costs £629 for everything except the the skimmer and heater is 137 gallons

Not really knowing the full details all I can say is that being an educated consumer is your best defense. FWIW this applies to ANY purchase whether it is a fish tank or something entirely different.
