Anemone alternatives

That is odd...it could be a tube anemone, but the tentacles look much thicker than other's that I've seen.

I guess if it has a tube, then that's probably what it is. Are their tubes normally colored? I don't recall reading anything on that, nor have i done much research on tube anemones in general.

that is what attracted to me to this anenome---there were about a dozen in the tank--and they have a very large thick bright orange foot.
I hate to admit it but I didn't realize that the foot would dissappear in the substrate:o But my wife likes the purple colour.

What you just described is an LTA!!

I have GBTA's, RBTA's, LTA's & a Tube anemone. The tube anemones tube is only the size of a pencil around. And the "Tube" is not colored.

An LTA has a Thick Purple or Orange foot!

Yeah its a purple LTA ( long tentacle anemone) I have one just like it..thats no tube its a foot..this is what a tube anemone looks like>>>>>>>

GMSguy---do you have a link to more info on this---I tried searching --all I get for Dorensis is carpet anenome--it doesn't look like a carpet--I have those also.
The coral place I go to has always been really reliable-----this one had a long orange tube on it if that is any help.

no Dorensis is Long Tentacled anemone here is my old LTA

thanks for all your help--I guess even my trusted coral store can be misinforming

I haven't blindsided myself in a year--LOL--but since it is a self confesssion:eek2:
what do I need to know about these in particular?

You lucky SOB!!! you thought you had a tube anem & had a beautiful PLTA! I've ordered 3 bright PLTA's online & all arrived stinky in the bag. So I tried to order a green one but the reefermaddness screwed that order up and sent me a BTA & still has not creditied this issue several months later.

Sorry for the rant... but again I'm jelous :) I would say your doing just fine with this one as it looks very healthy & happy.

I got mine from bluezoo and it is very healthy. Its still very healthy and growing. Maybe I just got lucky but everything I've ordered from them so far has been top notch.

They get huge and like food and light.

mine had to go at 16 inches went to a 180G and it was there for a year until he decided it was too big and it went to another guy.

i would move the chalice above it, they do sting softies and lps, giving them space is best thing to do. on the plus side Clownfish love these anemones and they seem to be a tough species.

I have heard different theories on tubes, fish eaters, non fish eaters, powerfull sting, not such a bad sting at all. I have two tubes at the bottom of one of my tanks and to date they have never killed a fish and I have had them for over two years.

Clowns will host wherever they want to including a clam, tank raised percs I believe dont have the instinct to host as my 5 yr old percs look at the anenome and move along to say a clam frogspawn etc or nothing at all, not like a wild caught clown.

Fish Passion [welcome]

If your clowns are hosting clams and non hosting anemones its a good guess to say their instincts are fully intact.

Its usually more of a wrong anemone type of thing and not a clowns wont host type of thing. if you were to provide your percula with a healthy Magnifica or Gigantea anemone the clowns would host it and fast.

thanks for the info---one step ahead --I already moved the pagoda away.

how are they around other anenome(like the rose tip)

Well ty for the welcome GSMguy, I thought now that I have high speed out here in the boonies I can enjoy the RC site, only been a member for 2yrs without posting.
I actually am wanting to get a centrepiece anemone for my 90 where I will create a large valley between the liverock down to the substrate for such an invert, thanks for the gentle nudge and info in the right direction.
As far as my wife is concerned it was only $20.00...

Consider the long tentacle like I just purchased----came from Oakville----you probably could get it shipped really easy

lol 20 dollar rule of reefing-----LOL-----and the sequel --everthing that cost more just magically shows up--hitch hiker I guess--LOL

i have no experience mixing them, I would imagine the same rules apply that usually do, dont let them touch. Give them as much space in between the anemones as possible and run carbon 24/7 to take care of any possible chemical warfare.

long tentacles are nice anemones that clowns seem to respond to well, also H. Crispas are nice anemones that most clowns seem to take to.

H. Magnifica, and S. Gigantea are expert anemones for sure, from the sounds of it a gigantea sounds better suited to your tank than a magnifica. But i think an LTA would be nice in the center of the tank.

Getting a healthy Gigantea is hard, also they do like lots of Random flow/ surges and lots of light.
